LAWN TENNIS

The annual meeting of the Parnell Tennis Club took place during the week; and there was a good attendance of members. As usual, the ladies of the Club were much to the fore, and after all they have done during the winter it was rather hard lines having their subscription, raised from fifteen shillings to one guinea. It was eyidentf that the financial outlook’ demanded fit, for the ladies were unanimous in voting the new tax on themselves.

Mr Dargaville has been elected hon. secretary to the club. I thought that the new secretary was more devoted to yachting than tennis, and was not very often on the lawn, but possibly it is his intention to forsake his old love for a new this season and stick to the racquet.

It seems a pity that the old Auckland Club cannot be rejuvenated. Many of the best players first learnt their tennis at the picturesque ground in Grafton Road', and it is certainly to be regretted that the Club is npt more of a power in the land, especially as the ground is so handily situated for city residents. The fact of only having three courts is rather tl handicap, but it seems rather strange that most of the crack players prefer to go further afield ana 1 then play on worse lawns.

Most of the lawns arc looking beautifully fresh and green, and by the time the season opens should! play well. The West End ground is in yood order, and also Eden and .Epsom. Parnell is habdly so good as it might be, while Auckland should be better than last year.
