every floor at stated periods during the night, .and that a watchman’s time indicator be kept. The committee further recommend some efficient method of communicating a fire alarm to every inmate by touching an electric button on any floor to set off something ringing, similar to a fire alarm, and thus thoroughly arouse the inmates, warn the police station, and the fire brigade; also that in large hotels employees should be put through a periodical fire drill, with station assigned to every employee, male and female, in the event of fire. At all hotels wooden ladders should be kept for such purposes onjy, and of sufficient length to reach the first floor windows. That in all bedrooms directions to the fire escape be printed. The committee also recommend that all heavy articles of furniture be removed from all opening corridor windows, and that in bedrooms where the escape is by balcony outside the window, only light dressing tables stand in front of the bedroom windows. Finally, the committee is of opinion that as the the Auckland City Council is passing bylaws for the future welfare of the community, under the new Municipal Act, that the Council would be willing to receive suggestions from the Licensing Committee relative to the future building regulations that shall be enforced by the Building Surveyor. Whether the committee send any suggestions to the City Council or not, the committee is of opinion that for future construction of hotels certain broad lines should be laid down by which it shall be imperative that although the method of cbnstuction as shown by plans aud specifications may not be such as to make the proposed building fireproof, yet it should be so constructed as to give several easy means of escape. The committee suggest that if possible a committee composed of the City Engineer, Building Surveyor, and Superintendent of the Fire Brigade, with power to add to their number, should be invited to offer suggestiocs that will aid the Licensing Committee in determining whether the proposed hotel to be constructed would, in the estimation of the committee, meet the requirements to their satisfaction with regard to sanitary arrangements, health, comfort, ventilation, cleanliness, safety of boarders, or visitors, which suggestions could be made applicable for large temperance hotels, boarding-houses, etc., which do not come under the jurisdiction of the Licensing Committee. The sub-com-mittee, in conclusion, desire to express their thanks to Sub-Inspector Mitchell for his assistance and in.ormation given, so as to enable the committee to carry out their investigations.
