'An American writer states that Kid M’Coy returned from his European trip in very poor health, and that he will never again be able to undergo a preparation for a ring encounter. Jeffries has announced that he will probably quit the ring forever if he whips Ruhlin. He has made money at the game, and, what is more, has kept the bulk of it, so that he is well fired financially, and has an income sufficient to enable him to lead a life of ease. The Committee of the Public Schools’ Amateur Athletic Association met at the Sports Club Booms last evening. It was decided to hold the annual sports cn Friday, March 29th. It was decided to add bayonet exercises and physical drill with arms and wand exercises to be competitive displays, and to invite other displays. A special prize will be given for the most unique display. The Secretary was instructed to arrange for a combined school concert in the Opera House, in order to raise funds. ■A. A.A. Club has received an excellent acceptances for their Autumn Carnival, which takes place on the Domain Cricket Ground on Saturday afternoon next, March 9. The principal event on the programme is the One Mile Amateur Bicycle Championship, in which the speedy riders, W. Reynolds, Brook, and Ewen will meet. The l£o yards Hurdles has an acceptance of five, amongst whom are Campbell and C. C. Laurie. The One Hundred Yards has seventeen competitors, and should prove an interesting race, from the fact that several new men are making their first appearance. The Three Hundred Yards has also a good entry of ln the 440yds Handicap a good race is promised, from the fact that there are nineteen entries. All the other events have received good entries, and given ■ fine., weather a capital day's sport should be witnessed. The High Jump has only brought out four entries, which would seem to indicate that field games are ,sadly going off in Auckland. The butchers held their annual picnic and sports at Motutapu on " Wednesday of last week. There was a good attendance.' and the sports were of an interest character. McLachlan’s time in the lOOyds C hampionship at the Caledonian Sports held in Napier on Saturday week be correct, it is a meritorious performance, and goes to prove that McLachlan is, without a doubt, one of the best, if not the best sprint runner in this colony. He at the same meeting won the 440yds Champion ship in 60 2-ssoc; in this race he had only one opponent, 8 o he seems to have taken things easy. There is not the slightest doubt that he is in great form at the present time. The 150yds (open amateur) Handicap run at the Watchm ikers’ and Jewellers picnic resulte 1 in a win for H G. Bell, with J. Leydon second, and J. Campbell third.
