The Parnell Sailing Club’s second series of races for the season, which have been postponed from time to time, are to be held next Saturday afternoon. St George’s Rowing Club have added a 16-foot pleasure boat to their fleet The following are the performances of B. Cavill in the Australasian Championships, concluded last week, in every event of which he finished first:—44oyds, smin 53 2 sth sec; halfmile, 12min 59 2-sth sec; 100yds, Imin 2aec (unofficial) ; 220yds, 2min 49|sec ; mile, 27min 56 2-sth sec. St George’s Rowing Club held trial fours on Saturday, February 9 for the Coates’ Challenge Cup The first heat was between crews stroked by J. Thomson and Pirie, the former winning by a length after a good race. In the second heatH. Thomson beat Waddy, and the last heat of the first round resulted in a win for Busby, who beat; Armitage. In the second round H. Thomson had a bye, and J. Thomson beat Busby. In the final, after a good race, J. Thomson beat H. Thomson. The winning crew consisted of J. Thomson (stroke), Dallen (3), Monteath (2) and McClelland (bow). The date for the Rathbone sculls has been fixed for next Saturday. An exchange says: —“ The manager of the new American defender, W. B. Duncan, junr, has appointed Captain Uriah Rhodes to be his Bailing master, and general satisfaction is expressed in America over his selection, as he is essentially an American. and the public want to see the yacht manned by Americana only. Captain Rhodes was mate on the Volunteer in 1887, and skipper of the Defender in 1898, when, it is claimed, that he outsailed Captain Barr in the trial races with Columbia. Barr is a Scotchman, and there was considerable feeling displayed in the matter in 1899, on that account. It was thought that all the crew selected should have been Americans, and a Scotchman was out of plaos.” J. A. Jarvis, the world’s long-distance champion, accomplished a remarkable performance at the Bacup Baths lately, when, in an attempt to lower the quarter-irile record, he covered the distance in smin 52 3-sth sec. The previous record which was also held by Jarvis was smin 53 2-sth sec.

At Adelaide, on the Torrens, J. J. Fahey beat G. Steel for the sculling championship of South Australia. The race was closely contested all the way, and was won by but 3ft. Fahey is regarded as a coming sculling champion. The Auckland Yacht Club’s official uniform made a great impression in Christchurch when the crew of the yacht Bainbow visited that city. The story goes that the crew in full-dress presented themselves at the gates at Lancaster Park and swaggered in, saying that they did ndt require passes. The man at the entrance was staggered, but recovered his p esence of mind enough to say : “Oh yes, Bandsmen always go in free.”—Oh ! that uniform. On another occasion the A.Y.C. togs were mistaken for a tram conductor’s uniform. At the Port Nicholson Yacht Club’s, races on Saturday, the yacht Waitangi easily defeated the Auckland boat Rainbow over a 13-mile course in a one reef breeze. Starting 2min ssec after Rainbow, Waitangi finished 2min 41sec in front, and as the latter was in receipt of lOmin time allowance, she therefore won by 14min 46sec’. Rainbow was sailed by E. C. E. Mills and Waitangi by Mr D. Howard. On Saturday last at the Dunedin Amateur Swimming Club’s Tournament, the 100yds Championship of Otago was won by G. A Tyler (Auckland), who beat A. M. Sims (Dunedir), by less than 2ft. Time, 75 l-ssec.
