A meeting of the General Committee for the Lyttelton Jubilee Begatta was held last week. A * letter from the secretary of the N.Z. Amateur Bowing Association stated that the Committee of the Association had decided to pass the ' regatta programme with the exception of the clause providing that two boats, the property of ‘ separate clubs should enter or there should be no race, and stipulated that a clause should be added providing that . the regulations for the rowing events should not clash with the rules of the Association. Mr G. A. Lewin, secretary, reported that there was every likelihood of excellent entries for the rowing events and the First-class Yacht Bace. The meeting decided to grant £2 10s towards a Model Yacht Bace, to be held at Lyttelton on January 3rd. It was agreed to recommend the Fireworks Committee to have a display on each evening of the regatta. It was announced that the Royal Humane .. Society had promised two medals for a life saving competition at the swimming races in connection with the regatta. Bailey and Lowe launched the 24 footer on Thursday last. She is a very handsome little craft, and has baen named* Miro. Ihe trial •pins she had last week were very satisfactory, she appears to get through the water very fast. The Auckland yacht hainbow arrived at Wellington last Friday afternoon. The trip from Auckland occupied about nineteen days. Fine weather was experienced throughout, and she called in at nearly every port en route. After a stay of nearly a week in Napier, she set sail for Wellington on Tuesday, called in at Cape Kidnappers, where the crew had some good shooting. No accident of any kind occurred during the trip, and the crew are in excellent health and spirits. 9 he yacht left for Lyttelton on Monday. The Northern Steamship Coy have generously placed the sum of £2O at the disposal of the Auckland Yacht Club to provide prizes for the Waiheke Begatta, to be held on New Year’s Day off the Northern Company’s Wharf at Cowes’ Bay. Fitter well in hand, the hull being practically completed, and she is expected to be got out of the shed by the end of next week. The new boat has excited a considerable amount of attention from local yachtsmen. Mr W. A. Wilkinson’s new 24-footer Speedwell, which 0. Baily is building, will be ready for launching at the end of this week. Petrel, one of the new 30-iooters built by Logan Bros for Sydney, this season, scored a very good win in a race at Sydney on the Ist inst. The new Payne designed boat, Magic, was a competitor in the race, and finished second, whilst Aoma (Logan Brothers’ last season’s building) was a good third, $ ~~ At the Tauranga Begatta, to be held on the 29th. inst, a special prize of £l5 first and £5 second is to be given for a heavy-weight maiden four-oared gig race, for which four of the local rowing clubs of Auckland have signified their intention of competing. Cheap fares are to be issued by the Northern Steamship Company. Ihe Manukau Yacht Club held their firstjrace of the season last Saturday afternoon, which
proved to be a verj eventful race, as most of the yachts came to grief in some way. The weather was very rough, and rain was falling heavily all the time. Ihe course was twice round from the wharf to the Horn and back. The following boats started, viz.:—Kiwi, The Belle, Pretoria, Myrtle, Molly Swash, Ladysmith, Galatea, and Mascotte. Shortly after the start Ladysmith and Galatea missed stays and ran aground on the Mangere beach 9he n-xt boat to come to grief was the Pretoria, which broke her tiller, fhe Mascotte shifted her ballast, and nearly went under in mid channel, opposite the fourth buoy. Fortunately she righted sufficiently to enable her to get into shallow water. This left only two boats in the race, namely, Molly Swash and The Belle, and they finished in that order, Molly Swash finishing by half-an-hour.
