AUCKLAND V OHINEMURIWIN FOR AUCKLAND BY FIVE POINTS TO Nil. On Saturday last the inter-union match Auckland v Ohinemuri was played at Paeroa. The Auckland team journeyed down by the Taniwta on Friday night, and arrived about three o’clcck

on Saturday morning, after a fair passage. Auckland went out the favourites, and though Ohinemuri put their best team in the field the visitors outclassed them. The teams were es follows : —

Ohinemubi. — Full-back, L. Shaw; threequarters, Moore. . Thom, Landy, five-eighths, Rockley ; half, Houghton; wings. Cock and Mathias ; forwards, Sorensen, Douglas, McMillan, McGuire, Clarkin, Bennett, and Gordon. Auckland. — Full-back, Donovan ; threequarters, Abeolum, Woods, and Paul ; fiveeighths, Asher ; half, Kiernan ; wings, Gallagher and Doran ; forwards, H. Wilson, A. Wilson, Tyler, Bonella, McGregor, Irvine, and Brady.

Ohinemuri won the toes, and chose to take advantage of the slight wind in their favour. A. Wilson kicked off, and the blue and white vanguard rushed up smartly and spoilt Hockley’s chance of picking up. He kicked a rolling ball and sent it down to Asher, who returred it out of touch at the half-way flag. A scrum ensued from the throw in, and Mathias brought the ball through on his toes. Gallagher was, however, too smart for him, and sent the ball down to Ohinemuri’s three - quarter line, from where Moore returned it to half way. 'I he home forwards gradually work'd the ball down into Auckland's territory, and Paul loosing his feet gave Ohinemuri a chance, but Auckland succeeded in forcing Asher getting a chance started off, but was grassed by Thom before he had gone far, but Doran was on hand and carried the ball down the field at his toes till he came to Rockley, who kicked it away from him. Doran, however, got on it again, and backed up by McGregor, Brady, Gallagher, and A. Wilson, he came through with a rush, but Hough'on, the Ohinemuri centre half, stopped and kicked out near the Auckland 25. From the throw-in Houghton initiated a passing run between Rockley and Thom, which the latter succetded in carrying across the line, and loud was the enthusiasm, as the spectators reckoned on a score, but, alas, they were doomed to disappointment, for the ball was ordered back for another throw-in From the throw in a scrum ensued, and Kiernan got the ball a*ay neatly to Asher, who transferred to Absolum, but the fast following up of Gordon, Clarkin and McMillan spoilt him. From a kick into Ohinemuri’s territory, the ball struck Shaw and rebounded and a fumble on the part' of Landy gave Auckland an opportunity which V oods, Asher and Absolum did their beet to improve, but they found the home team’s defence too sound. Numerous scrums ensued, and Ohinemuri were kept penned in their own territory until Rockley relieved, and half time was sounded. In the second spell Auckland showed more combination, and they very soon put their opponents bn the defensive. Ohinemuri temporarily relieved, but Auckland forwards came on again and Rockley was compelled to force. From the kick-out loose play ensued until Rockley took the ball in his own 25, and after carrying it to neutral territory, passed to Gordon, who in turn endeavoured to pass to Thom but Doran intercepted. Several scrums followed, and Auckland carried play in Ohinemuri’s ?5 where Kiernan neatly got a pass away to Woods, who transferred to Asher, who in turn handed on to Absolum, who crossed the line and scored. A. Wilson kicked a fine goal amidst great applause. Five minutes later time was called, leaving Auckland victors by 5 points to nil.

Though the ( hinemuri fifteen fought stubbornly to win, the combination of the Auckland fifteen told against them. Auckland’s try was undoubtedly due to Kiernan’s smartness in getting the ball away, and the neat passing which Woods, Asher ahd Absolum displayed. Paul was the weak spot in the Auckland team and Dug. Hay’s services were greatly missed, On more than one occasion the Newton threequarter went near costing Auckland the match. Donovan played a safe game, and got through the work entrusted to him m a creditable manner.

Absolum, Asher, Woods and Kiernan all played safe games, and individually got through their work well.

Of the Auckland vanguard, Gallagher, Doran and A. Wilson were perhaps the pick of a wellchosen lot.

Leo Shaw, Moore, Rockley, Thom and Houghton all played good back games for Chinemuri. The Ohinemuri pack all grafted hard, and though beaten were not disgraced. Mr Angus Campbell gave every satisfac ion as referee, as did also Messrs Baton and Jones as line umpires for Auckland and Ohinemuri re spectively.

The employees of Messrs Campbell, Ehrenfried Co and Meisrs Mennie and Dey met at Ellerslie on Saturday last for their annual football match. The match resulted in a win for the Campbell and Ehrenfried Co by 6 points to nil. The match was well contested throughout. Burns and Symons were the score-getters.

Ellerslie and Otahuhu met at Otahuhu on Saturday last, when Ellerslie won by 9 points to nil. McDonald scored two ties and O. Austin one, neither of which were converted.

The second match between the North and South Divisions took place at Hawera on July 26, and resulted in a win for the South by a try to nil. Hamblyn scored for the winners. The game was well fought out. A third match will be played, probably at Stratford, before the rep. team is picked. Three test matches seem to be too many, considering that the rep. team need some play to obtain combination before they meet another rep. team. Taranaki this season will play two matches against Wanganui, and one each against Wellington, Otago, and Auckland. Other fixtures may be arranged. Taranaki should have a good team, but I am afraid they will lack combination in their first matches owing to wc.ut of practising together. Tate, an old player, is shaping well on the wing, and it is on the cards that he may yet don another rep, jersey.—Club football is almost completed, and all that practically remains is for the senior and first junior teams in each division to play off for the championship of the province. One match only will be played this year. —Humphries, the Taranaki half, is playing as good a game as eve/.—Allen does not seem too keen on playing in the reps., but I suppose when it comes to the pinch he will be there.— Tabanaki OoebesBONDENT. It was decided at last week’s meeting of the Management Committee of the Bugby Union to send the Auckland B team to play Northern Wairoa on Saturday next. On Thursday last at Te Puke, Te Puke met and easily defeated Tauranga by 13 points to three.

i Mr Arneil has chosen the following team to ! play against Northern Wairoa on Saturday next : i Full-back, Upton ; three-quarters, Sutherland, Lendrum, Roberts; five-eights, Taylor; halfback, Young; wings, Brown and Stannaway { forwards, Cucksey, McCluskie, Scott, McKnight, Handcock, Eaton and Dunning ; emmergencies, Stewart, Dempsey, Magee, Wynyard, Grey, Galloway, Beeston, Long, Stirling, Woolier and B arp. The two Auckland teams will meet for practice at Buckland’s Saleyards to-night (Thuradaj). On Saturday afternoon at the Recreation Ground, Te Autemetand defeated Pirate seniors by 6 points to 3, after a very willing go. In the first half Te Aute scored, but the attempt at goal proved unsuccessful. Shortly after this Pirates did likewise. In the second spell Te Aute again crossed the Pirates’ line, and the game remained in this position until the call os time. No goals were kicked. For the winners, O’Brien, Ooote, Mathews and Walker were prominent. For the losers, Strickland, Franklands, Speedy and Hilleon played well. Mr Renouf had charge of the whistle. Caledonians again succeeded in defeating West End II by 3 points to nil. Mr Cowell acted as referee. On the Spit Ground West End I defeated Port Ahuriri 111 by 5 points to 3. Mr Fulton was referee. The following have been selected to represent Hawke’s Bay against Poverty Bay next Saturday Fullback, McVay (Napier) ; three-quarters, O’Brien, Ngatai, Wihana (all of Te Aute); five-eights, Hume (Napier) ; half, Thomson (Napier) ; wings, Walker (Te Aute) D. O’Connell ( Clhe); forwards, Carlson (Pirates) G. Caldwell (Clive), B. Caldwell (Clive), Cheer (Clive), Irons (Napier), Joll (Olive), McMinn (Napier) ; emmergency forward, Kay (Clive). The local men journey north od Friday night. (Napier Oorrespon" dent). PUBLIC SCHOOL MATCHES. BERESFORD-STREET WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP. On Saturday last Beresford-street and Devonport, who were level for the A section championship, met at Potter’s to play off for the coveted honours. Numerous spectators journeyed out to see their favourites do battle for the premiership. Mr Mackie got the game going at three o’clock, and interest was very keen throughout the match. The Beresford-street boys had much the best of the game, and left the field victorious by 10 points to nil. Magee and Nolan each scored a try, both of which were converted by Cox. The Shore boys in the second spell made strenuous efforts to retrieve their position, but the defence of the red and blacks was too sound for them.
