THE L.V. PORTRAIT GALLERY.

MR JAMES McLEOD. Mr James McLeod, whose portrait appears in this issue, was born in New Brunswick, one of the English colonies in America. He came to

New Zealand with his parents when he was but six years of age, and has made this colony his home ever since. He first entered the timber business in the vicinity of Helensville, with which district be identified himself. He was on the School Committe for some years, acting as chairman for two years, and served two terms as chairman of the Town Board. After leaving Helensville, he took over the Star Hotel, at Otahuhu, which he carried on for some time. Some six years ago he sold out to Mr John Hands, and about five years ago bought Mr Brophy out of the Star Hotel, Newton, which place he has occupied ever since As chairman of the Auckland Licensed Victuallers’ Association, Mr McLeod has proved an efficient officer, and throwing himself energetically into the

work, has, in a great degree, forwarded the movement of the consolidation of Trade interests, which is now, happily, an accomplished fact in Auckland. In company with the vice-president of the Association, Mr Michael Foley, he attended the Wellington Conference as representative for Auckland, and that both did good service is proved by the results. In conjunction with ’the Executive, Mr McLeod has probably done more to put down Sunday and after-hours trading than either the police or the Licensing Bench.
