SOUTH CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB AUTUMN MEETING.

[By our Canterbury Correspondent.] The South Canterbury Jockey Club’s Autumn Meeting opened at Washdyke on Thursday. The morning was cold, and the attendance small. Racing commenced with the High-weight Handicap, seven fu longs. Vandyke (Bst 21b), who was looking well after his lengthy spell, was made favorite. Bristol (Bst 121 b) was at once taken to the front, and, making his own running right through, won by a couple of lengths from Phryne (Bst 131 b), who just belt Vandyke for second. place. Telemeter broke down at the top of the straight, and was pulled up. Dividend, £5 4s. Lady Medallsst (Bst 101 b) won the Washdyke Welter by a length from Galileo (9st 21b), Gleaming (Bst) third. The last-named was in front at the distance, when she gave way to Lady Medallist and Galileo. Dividend, £3lBs. Aidershot easily beat three others in the Hack Race, and was then bought in for £l2. The following saddled up for the Autumn Handicap :—Jupiter Bst 61b, Paladin Bst lib, Nihilist 7st 121 b, Suzannah 7st 21b, Vandyke 6st 121 b (carried 7st lib). Jupiter was the popular selection. After travelling three furlongs Paladin and Suzannah drew out from the others, and at the half distance they were still striding along in front of Jupiter, with Vandyke last. Rounding the top turn Suzannah gave way to Jupiter, but before reaching the straight Vandyke had taken second position, just behind Jupiter. This pair came on together to the distance, when Vandyke shot out, and won by three lengths. Nihilist was third, two lengths behind Jupiter, and Paladin last Dividend, £ll 6s. The Tony Race resulted in the Chainshot pony, Little Daisy, winning by five lengths from Ukase Dividend, £3 6s. Old Warrington easily beat Heliograph and Aidershot in the Selling Race, and was bought in for £24 The Flying Handicap brought out St Denis Bat 101 b, Abercrombie Bst 51b, First Blood Bst 21b, Gladys 11. 7st 51b, and Conqueror 6st 101 b. The last-named was favorite. Gladys 11. and Conqueror drew out at the start, and in the first twoiurlongs the latter was a length ahead of Gladys 11., St Denis running next. Conqueror was first into the straight, and despite a strong run by First Blood, easily shook him off, and won by five lengths. St Denis was eight lengths behind Fist Blood, and Gladys 11. was fourth Dividend, £2 12s. Heavy rain fell all day on Friday, and made things very unpleasant for racegoers. The course was in a bad condition, and the attendance was again small. All the six starters in the Stewards Welter, six furlongs, were well backed, The Serf starting a better favorite than the others. After leading for half the distance The Serf fell back last, and it was subsequently ascertained that he broke a blood vessel in his head. Phryne (8 it 121 b), who occupied a prominent position from the start, took the lead halfway up the straight, and beat First Blood (9st 31b) by three lengths, Red Banner being six lengths further away third. Dividend, £7. Jhe County Plate, six furlongs, was won by another of F. Olaridge’s team, Bonaparte, a threeyear old by Phseton. Bonaparte, who carried 7st led all the way, and won by four lengths from Gloaming (7st 131 b), with Galileo third, three lengths behind. Dividend, £2 lOj. The field for the princ pal handicap, one mile, comprised—Jupiter Bst 121 b, Nihilist Bst lib, Cherrystone 7st 101 b, Phryne 7st 71b (51b extra), and Suzannah 7st 51b. Cherrystone and Nihilist were about equal favorites. This pair had the race to themselves, and were in front throughout, Nihilist beating Goodman’s mare by two lengths, with Phryne just behind Cherrystone, and Suzannah tourth. Dividend, £3 6s. Aidershot (Bst 31b) and Heliograph (Bst 121 b) were the only stai ters in the Novel Race. There were 8| tickets on Aidershot and 12 £ on Heliograph Aldershot led all the way, and won easily, and paid his supporters well, a dividend of £2 10s being returned. He was bought in fur £l4. Bristol (Bst 91b) followed up his success on the first day by beiting Warrington (Bst 4lb), First Blood (Bst 31b), and The Lambkin (6st 12lb) in the t horts. Murray Hobbs’ castoff led from the start, and cantered home three lengths in front of old Warrington, who beat First Blood by a length for second place Dividend, £2 19s. The Pony Handicap furnished an exciting struggle between Little Daisy (Bst 4lb) and Ukase (Bst 21b), the latter just getting her head in front in the last stride. Dividend, £2. Jupiter (Bst 101 b) only had Seabrook (7st 81b) to beat in the Farewell Handicap. This he easily succeeded in doing, paying a dividend of £1 12s.
