CANTERBURY.

South Canterbury nominations — Sale of racing stock —Benzoin-— Amberley meeting — The C.J.C. classic entries —M.r Stead’s Cup candidates — Trotting — 800 kmakers at the South Canterbury meeting —Mr N. Mcßae —Douglas —Castashore—Djin-Djin —Fly and Schnapps — The Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting. Chbistchuch, August 24. The nominations for the South Canterbury meeting are very satisfactory, and the club should have a successful gathering. In the entries for the limaru Cup, one mile and a quarter, the following N.Z. Cup candidates figure Jupiter, First Blood, Sequin, Dundas, Huku, Pitch and Toss, Malatua, and Daphne. Castashore, Tortulla, Derry, Popgun, Full Charge, and Black Dust left for the North by boat on August 21. Messrs Pyne and Co sold the following racing stock at Tattersall’s, on Monday, August 21: — On account of Mr A. S. George, Amberley, bay filly by Fleur de Lis, 3yrs, Mr R. Mcllraith, £l2 ; on account of Mr C. G. Dalgety, bay filly, by Cheap Jack—Cherry, 3yrs, Gags, Mr J. Kewen; Kissmiss, by Hotchkiss —Bridal Rose, 4yrs, Mr W. Hawkins, 23gs; Golden Legend, by St. Leger —Bangle, syrs, Mr W. Hawkins, 30g?; General Wolfe, by Wolverine —Sortie, syrs, Mr J. D. Hall, 30gs ; on account of Mr J. Eaglesome, b g Hickory, by Thackeray, 4yrs, Mr J. Shaw. 13gsj on account of Mr H. A. Knight, bimetallist, by Apremont —Silver Queen, 6yrs, Mr V. Harris, 55gs ; Soubriquet, by Apremont —Nickname, Mr G. W. Hardwick, 28gs; on account of Mr J. T. Blake, Schnapps, by Gipsy, aged, Mr A. E. Ward, £4O. Several other animals of all classes were offered, but failed to reach owners’ reserves* The presence of the name of Umslopogaas, Daphne, and First Blood in the South Canterbury nomination list suggests that these horses are likely to be raced in this Island in the spring. Murray Hobbs’ English-bred colt, Benzoin, is turning out better than was expected, and if he retains his present form will be hard to beat in the short races at the N ovember meeting.

The ex-Wanganui horse, Irish Twist, who won two Hunters’ Hurdles at the National meeting, has been allotted the crushing weight of 14.12 in the Hunters’ Flat Race at Amberley Steeplechase Meeting. Mainstay (12.4), Jib (12.1), Crusade (12.0) are among the entries. August 29.

The entries of yearlings for the classic events of the Canterbury Jockey Club received on Friday were —Welcome Stakes, 89 ; Derby, 67; Oaks, 58; Champagne Stakes, 92; Tenth Challenge Stakes, 73. Entries for the Canterbury Cup this year number 19, which must be considered satisfactory. This race is generally contested by three or four horses, but on looking through the present list one would come to the conclusion that the number will be increased this year. One of Mr Stead’s Cup candidates, St. Lucia,, is suffering from a bad attack of paralysis. It is rumoured that neither Sant Ilario or Screw Gun. are as well as their owner and trainer would wish.

At a meeting of the committee of the Canterbury Trotting Club, the sum of £lO was voted to E. Albaugh, the trainer who had the misfortune to break a leg previous to the club’s recent meeting. A deputation from the Canterbury Trotting Club, consisting of the president (Mr T. Marr) and Messrs H. Mcllraith and L. Wilson, left for Wellington to-day to interview the Colonial Secretary, in order to ascertain if it is incumbent, on the club, before getting further totalisator permits, to join the Lancaster Park Club in the new ground at Addington. The South Canterbury Jockey Club, at their meeting last night, decided to license bookmakers for their race meeting next week. Mr N. Mcßae, the amateur rider, established a record at the late National Meeting, which will be hard to beat. He rode no less than six winners. T. Williams and H. Moore were the only professional riders who scored two wins.

Two of Mr D. Rutherford’s horses, Social Pest and Pensioner, will be trained on at Biocarton for the South Canterbury meeting. Social Pes

has not been nominated for any of the hurdle races —probably on account of the heavy burden he -would have to carry compared with other horses —but he will be given an opportunity to distinguish himself on the flat. Double Event’s name does not figure in the nominations for Timaru Cup, but his owner has entered him for three events at the meeting. The son of Boz has not done any racing since last autumn. I hear he is being trained with a view to being given another chance to win the New Zealand Cup.

Djin-D jin is again in regular work, and, so far, has stood up to all Ted Cutts has asked him to do. The son of Apremont—Dudu has a lot of admirers who have backed him for the Cup, but he will have to be in his very best form to win. Since Oastashore won the Heathcote Handicap at the National Meeting he has been steadily nibbled at for the Cup. Backers got most of the money available at 100’s to 6, and pencillers now want a point longer. I was told by two Hawke’s Bay sports that Douglas will not start in the N.Z Cup. As my informants vouchsafed the information I give it to you for what it is worth. Douglas continues to be backed for the Cup Ely, the hunter lately in Mr J. T. Blake’s charge, was sold at Tattersall’s and has gone into Mr G. Murray Aynsley’s stables. The gelding will be taken to the Timaru meeting. Mr J. T. Blake also sold Schnapps, who will also start at Timaru.

Two highly-bred animals were sold at the National sale of bloodstock at prices which show that a horse must have something more than his breeding to recommend him. Golden Legend (by St. Leger —Bangle), who has proved a great disappointment as a racehorse so far, changed hands at 30 guineas. Kiss Miss (by Hotchkiss — Bridal Rose) was knocked down for 23 guineas.

The Christchurch Hunt Club held its sports meeting at Riccarton on Saturday, when the attendance was only fair. The rain, which fell during Friday night, made the course very heavy. The following are the results : —Ladies’ Bracelet, five furlongs: Fitzroy (by Son-of-a-Gun) 1, Ronald 2 ; won by two lengths; time, Imin 9 2-5 sec. Hunters’ Steeplechase, three miles : Fleetwood 1, Longfellow 2, Mainstay 3 ; Mainstay refused at the first fence, but was afterwards got over; Fleetwood won easily. Second Hunters’ Steeplechase : Akiki (by Stonyhurst) 1, Rata 2, Longfellow 3; won by eight lengths. The Farmers’ Handicap was won by Fleur de Lys, who beat twelve others. Jack (an aged son of Betrayer) won the Farmers’ Hack Hurdles, also the Farmers’ Steeplechase (amatour riders). Mr N. Mcßae rode two winners and two seconds. The club announced that bookmakers would not be allowed on the course, but several were bold enough to ignore the club, and appeared to transact a lot of business.
