THE ENGLISH CHAMPIONSHIPS.

The athletic championship meeting was held at Wolverhampton on July I, "before a big attendance of spectators. The weather was showery, and the damp made the track a bit slow. The following are the results of the various events: — One Mile. — Hugh Welsh (holder), Watson’s College A.C., 1; Charles Bennett, Finchley Harriers, 2 ; R. Wellin, Essex Beagles, 3. Pheysey, Church Stretton, failed at 7ft, 2. J. Poole, Windermere, the holder, lost his pole at Warrington, and coud not compete, as the others would not lend their poles. Two Miles Steeplechase. —W. Stokes, Birchfield Harriers, 1 ; C. Ingmere, Polytechnic Harriers, 2 ; H. G. Lloyd, T.H. and H. and L.A.C., 3; G. W. Orton, New York A.C., 4. Seven started. Stokes won by 100yds in llminl6 4-ssec. The water jump was 18ft wide.

The 440yds Hurdle Championship of New South Wales was decided at Sydney on August 8. The starters were W. Lindsay, G. C. Griffin (holder), A. J. Barter, and J. C. Marsden. Contrary to expectation, Roseingrave and Southwick did not start. Lindsay took the lead at the start, and at the last jump had a three-yards lead of Griffin, who fell, thus allowing Lindsay to run home an easy winner by 20yds from Griffin. Barter was third. The winner’s time was 64 l-ssec. He is a scholar at the Sydney Grammar School.

Sydney Smith, an old Sydney athlete, won the Cross-country Championship of Western Australia on August 3. The race was run at Perth, and Smith’s time for the five miles was 30min 39sec. He won by half a mile. On the same day J. Law won the 100yds Championship of the colony in llfsec.

A London exchange says :—“Sir Francis Jeune has appointed Mr Charles Martin Callow to the offices of Marshal and Sergeant-at-Mace of the Admiralty Division, and Chief Clerk of the Admiraliy Registry, in succession to Mr Alfred T. Rackham, who recently retired after forty-five years’ service. Mr Callow entered the Admiralty Registry in June, 1854. The salary attached to the appointment is £BOO a year.” On June 10 last C. M. Callow, despite his 63 years, finished third in a two miles walking handicad at Stamford Bridge Grounds, London.
