On the theatrical page we give a portrait of Miss Marie Metcalfe, one of thejpromising members of the popular Pollard Company. Miss Metcalfe has been for some time a member of the Company, and “keeping dark on the weather bow.” took the opportunity when it came to her in the part of Lady Virginia Forest in “ A Gaiety Girl.” Miss Marie Metcalfe made quite a hit in this responsible character, her singing and acting Loth coming in for favourable comment. Miss Metcalfe is a daughter of Mr W. H. Metcalfe, an actor well-known in the seventies in connection with the late F. M. Bates ana other actor managers. Mr Cecil Lawrence, whose portrait appears in this issue, has successfully stage-managed the production of “LaPoupee,” at the Opera House. Mr Lawrence hails from that City of Delight and Smoke, London. He served his apprenticeship at the Prince of Wales and Strand Theatres there and was the original Shrimp in the first provincial production of the musical comedy “ In Town.’ He came out to Australia to superintend the staging of “La Poupee” for Messrs AVilliamson and Musgrove, and is now under engagement to Mr Tom Pollard. Our artist has several sketches taken at the recent meeting at Ellerslie reproduced in this week’s paper. It will not be difficult to recognise the “Potentate.” The particulars of Mr Cutts and the plucky cross country rider Frank Burns will be found elsewhere. The picture of Dr. Tripe and his volunteer ambulance corps will be of interest to others besides our Wanganui readers. We also reproduce a picture of “The Only Jalvan,” the expert conjurer and Oriental wonder worker now performing with the Gaiety Company, at the City Hall. Jalvan it will be remembered was with the McAdoo Company during their recent visit to Auckland.
