WELLINGTON.

Noles on the Otaki Maori Meeting. Wellington, May 30. Messrs Donovan anift Armit, who bought the Otaki Maori Racing Club’s gates for £l3l, report a loss of £5O on the speculation. The weather on the first day was very bad, but the number of complimentary tickets issued is said to be out of all proportion to the attendance.

Mr H. Hannah, of Carterton, owner of Coin, recently purchased Woolloomoolo. Ruby Twist broke down last week, consequently did not take any part in the Otaki meeting. The Otaki Maori Hack Racing Club were unfortunate in the weather last week. On the first day (the 24th) it rained all day. This had the effect of not only keeping people away from the course on the opening day, but affected the second day’s attendance considerably. The amount put through the totalisator during the two days was £7747, or £2721 more than was registered for the corresponding meeting last year. Returned visitors from Otaki speak in terms of praise of Sentry, and say he is as good as Vedette. In the Railway Plate, on the second day, Mr Tancred pitted Ngatihuia against the Taranaki horse at level weights (lOst 111 b), but the latter won anyhow. Gobo and Langtry were among the starters, but could not foot it with Sentry, a four-year-old gelding by Vanguard—Blanche. The surprise of the Otaki meeting was created in the Stewards’ Welter by Agent-General (Ahua —Lady Evelyn). There was only £6 on him in the machine, so that he returned the very nice dividend of £42 3s.
