AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB’S AUTUMN MEETING.

Second Day—Wednesday, April 5.

Very fine weather again favored the Auckland Trotting Club, and the second day of the Autumn Meeting passed off satisfactorily. Mr A. R. Harris (in the judge’s box), and Mr 0. F. Mark (the secretary) got through their duties in an efficient manner. Mr Cutts, the starter, was not part cularly happy in all his despatches.. The attend ance was not large, but still, speculation was pretty lively, and during the day Mr Blomfield’s staff handled £2226 in 10s tickets. This sum, added to the first day’s receipts, made a grand total of £4672 for the meeting. These figures show a big increase over last year’s total, when £4040 went through the machines. The catering was in Mr Tom Me Ewin’s hands, and consequently was up to the mark. Lady Retford was the only withdrawal from the twelve acceptors for the Final Trot, one mile and a half. Coralie, Vola Clair, and Dulce were the chosen ones of the public, but after some of the horses had been started on the journey Vola Clair reared, smashed his sulky, and could not start. Ihe stewards therefore decided to return his backers their money. Miss Graham led until the straight was reached for the last time, when Dulce, who had trotted in fine style, got on terms with her. Then the race was all over, and the scratch mare won easily by about three lengths. Hero was some distance oft third. Dulce trotted the mile and a half in 4min 2sec, a very fair performance.

For the Maiden Pony Race all the nine colored on the card went to the post. Stella, who has so often been fancied at Potter’s, was again made a warm favorite, and next to her the topweight, Lady Carrington, was the best backed. From a very bad start Texas shot away with a commanding lead He was never troubled, and won easily in Imin 7sec. Mr Morrison’s gelding paid £9 12s, a result as satisfactory as it was surprising. Stella made a fine late run, and just beat Deceiver for second money. Notwithstanding that there was no penalty clause in the conditions of the Easter Handicap Trot, the stewards took off ssecs from Dulce’s start However, she was made favorite for the race, from which Lady Retford was the only scratching. Duke C. was also well supported, and then punters fancied most the chances of Vola Clair and Pioke. Cob was quickly in front of Lawyer Bell, and held a good lead until the commencement of the final lap. Here he broke up badly, and Pioke, who moved in good style all through, went to the front. Hird’s gelding had no difficulty in winning from Cob, with Alice a good third, and Dulce well up fourth. The latter would probably have won the race but for the penalty. Fairy, Marvellous, and Spreydon went out of the April Handicap, and of the five left in the public strongly fancied Kit. Certain was also well backed, and Nannie had a good following. From an indifferent start Stenson was left at the post, and Certain made the running from Kit and New Boy. Simpson’s mount showed the way along the way along the home turn,- but at the entrance to the straight Kit closed up, and, drawing away at the comencement of the stand, she came on and won easily by three lengths, New Boy third, a length behind Certain. Duke C., Cleveland, and Maria declined the Autumn Handicap Trot, one mile and a half. In this race there was a bad blunder, and Bob E.T. got away lOsec before his proper time ; and finally won by four lengths from Albert Victor, who trotted in grand style, and never broke once, though he was under the whip for a considerable distance. The time was 3min 53sec. There was a protest from the owners of Albert Victor, but as it was not lodged within the time limit, the dividend was paid out on Bob E.T.—

Fairy and Helena were favorites for the Steeplechase, but the winner turned up in Little Tom, who beat Eflle, after a splendid race, by half a length. Frewin rode a capital race on the winner. Fairy fell at the stone wall the second time round, and Karaka, Lady Carrington, and Tickle-Me-Gently came to grief at the hurdle opposite the stand. In the Class Trot, one mile, Albert Victor gave the spectators another taste of his quality. The grand fellow trotted admirably, and catching the leaders at the commencement of the straight, he came away and won hard held by several lengths. The horse and driver received a tremendous ovation, and certainly it was well deserved. Albert Victor trotted the mile in 2min 28sec, though the time-board made him do the phenomenal go of Imin 28sec I 1 The ten on the card started for the Farewell Handicap, for which Stella was made favorite. This time Newell’s mare was not caught napping, and, going away with the lead, she kept it all the way, and won easily from Topsail and Texas.
