CANTERBURY.

The sale of Maus er— Successful jockeys —O’ Br ie n’s bad luc k — Dundas’ form—The for tn of Starshot —Poivder Monkey— Winning sires—Departure of H. Goodman.

Christchurch, April 11..

Although Mauser has been sold for stud purposes he will, 1 am told, do some more racing. His name appears among nominations for several races at the Ashburton Autumn Meeting. It is always interesting to note the successes of jockeys at' big metropolitan meetings. At the C.J.C. autumn fixture, R. Derrett heads the list with two wins and no less than five seconds ; T. Buddicombe rode two winners and two seconds ; W. Clarke, two firsts, one second, and one third ; R. Wilson, two firsts; while G. Robertson, W. Holmes, J. Pine, Donovan, Hewitt, Forward, Rainbow, and W. Brown each scored a winning bracket Young Pine, who is probably best of the und-r-seven stone division, was second twice and third three times. Dan. O’Brien’s ill-luck still sticks to him. Under ordinary circumstances Malatua’s performance was good enough t > win three out of five Easter Handicaps, but the colt had the misfortune to meet a veritable champion in Boreas. Malatua performed indifferently on the second day, while Peerage failed to rut. up to expectations. Aroma (O’Brien’s Light Artillery youngster) did not start at the meeting

Murray H bbs had no luck until the Final Handicap, which he won by the aid of Dundas. This colt ran really well in the Easter Handicap, seeing that he lost a few lengths at the start. Starshot is far from being the fiare she was this time twelve months ago. She was clean out of it in the Easter Handicap, while, on the second day, she could only get fifth in the Autumn Handicap. Hobbs tells me that his favorite has not struck form jet, but he hopes to win a race or two before the end of the season. Starshot ought to win at Duned n if she is going to win at all.

Pow der Monkey showed greatly improved form last week, and, after many failures, managed to win a geol stake for 1 er connections on the first day. Hi’herto, Powder Monkey has either run off or fallen while jumping at Riccarton. It was pleasing to see her fence well last week. Mr G. G. Stead is again at the head of the list of winning owners, his cheque last week amounting to £950. Goodman, who has been lucky at Canterbury meetings lately, comes second with £660; then follow F. Webb (£440) and H. A. Knight (£270). Cherrystone (by Ruby—Cherry), now four years old, has come on remarkably well since being in H. Good man’s charge. Before Goodman purchased Cherrystone she was running against third-raters; now she is in the same class as Nihilist, Female Franchise, Jewel, Rochester, Ben Farley, and others. Hotchkiss, by aid of Multiform and Screw Gun, headed the list of sires whose progeny ran at the Autumn Meeting, the amount won by these two champions totalling £9OO ; Medallion was responsible for £450, won by Pitch and Toss; Boreas annexed £440 for Sou’-wester ; and other winning sires were—St. George, £270 ; Ruby, £200; Boz, £145; Cuirassier, £135; Perkin Warbeck II , £l5O ; Chainshot, £l5O. H, Goodman left for Timaru to-day with his team —Pitch and Toss, Clinker, and Cherrystone.
