WELLINGTON TROTTING CLUB.

First Day—Saturday, January 7. The Wellington T.C. had splendid weather for the first day’s trotting at the new track. There was a good attendance, and £ll7O went through the machine. Mr Buckland had bad luck with Fritz at Wellington, The crack absolutely objected to leave the starter, and never took any part in the Wellington Trotting Club Handicap, a race which should have been a good thing for him. Fritz, evidently, does not like the long waiting, he wants to get going when the limit horses are away. Van Wilkes, who won the Trial Handicap, had no supporters on the inside totalisator, consequently the backers of other horses had their money returned less ten per cent. What and Vai had the finish of the Railway Handicap all to themselves, and What moving beautifully won by about twenty yards from his stable mate. Old Awahuri, for once in a way, behaved properly in the Electric Handicap, consequently he had not much difficulty in winning from Au Revoir and Monte Carlo. Awahuri had 13sec start, and with that advantage from Monte Carlo, any mile race would be at his mercy, providing he trotted kindly and refrained from trying to break things up and run away. The following are the results : — Trial Handicap. One mile. Van Wilkes, 4sec ... ... 1 Floss, lOsec ... ... ... 2 Hindoo, lOsec ... ... ... 3 Won by about a length. Time, 2min 55 2-5 sec. The second day of the Wellington Trotting Club’s Summer Meeting was favored with splendid weather, but this, coupled with the presence of Mr Buckland’s trotters, failed to draw more than about seven hundred people. The totalisator receipts realised £939, the sum added to the first day’s total making an aggregate of £2109 for the meeting. The number of protests was extraordinary. In the Borough Handicap. Eric from the 25sec mark was first past the judge, but a protest was immediately entered for galloping. This ended in the disqualification of the East Coast horse. Buckland’s What, who finished second, was also protested against, the owner of Heather Dew objecting to the stake going to What as he started before bis time. The stewards considered and ultimately dismissed the protest. In the next race the Local Handicap Dakota, the winner, was to on the grounds of

stewards saw nothing in the circumstances to disturb the judge’s verdict, and Dakota got the stake. In the Hutt County Handicap there was again a protest. Rookwood ■ won the race but the stewards disqualified the big horse for inconsistent running and awarded the race to Au Revoir. Rockwood’s owner was not at all satisfied with the decision, and has appealed to the North Island Trotting Association. Old Monte Carlo accounted for the opposition in the Stewards’ Handicap very easily. Trotting from scratch he beat Oakwood Abdallah b 36seo, very easily covering the two miles in smin llseo. , Buckland’s Sunshine, 15sec, had the bad luck to. fall when going very well. This time there was no opposition to the verdict, and Messrs Brake and Yarr’s old champion was accorded a warm reception. Dynamine, 25sec, the winner of the Selling Handicap was protested against on the ground of inconsistent running, but the stewards could not confirm the objector’s reasons, so Dynamine’s backers got the substantial dividend of £l3. J.H., who trotted so well at Potter’s Paddock recently, won the Recovery Handicap from Vai. Both J.H. and Vai were on the Bsec mark, th® winner doing the mile in 2.35 3-ssec. Buckland protested against J.H., as the form shown appeared to him to be inconsistent, but the stewards would not endorse that opinion.
