SALE OF THE MOTU - KOREA STUD.
The Motu-Korea stud was brought to the hammer on Saturday last as Messrs E. W. and A. Alison had decided to give up breeding thoroughbreds. There was a fair attendance at Messrs Hunter and Nolan’s yards in Durham Street, but the majority of those present -were probably there from curiosity rather than with a view of owning bloodstock. The Musket mares Tamora and Torme it were included in the sale, and it was anticipated that their presence in the catalogue would bring some of New Zealand’s foremost studmen on the scene by proxy at any rate if they were unable to be present in the flesh. However, the Musket mares were, comparatively speaking, neglected, and were sold at prices far below their real value. The fact seems clear that a good many bona fide buyers kept away from the sale thinking the various lots would realise very high prices, for we are assured that an Australian sportsman would have gone far beyond the sums realised by Tamora and by Torment, and we know that the purchaser of Regel could obtain to-day
a substantial profit on his bargain. These slowblooded individuals who missed the opportunity have only themselves to blame, as the “ bogie o± high prices should not have prevented their presence if they really wanted some of the stock. The following list of the lots, the prices realised and the purchasers will show how- widely the stud has been distributed. The price obtained for Regel, one of the finest sires we had in the province of Auckland, is far below his value, while Mr Kruse, who was buying for South Africa, obtained a rare bargain when he picked up a beautiful yearling filly by Seaton Delaval from Phantom for 20 guineas. Tamora, the dam of Nestor, with a Kegel colt at foot, and in foal to Seaton Delaval, brought only 65 guineas, while Torment, the other Musket mare, with a filly foal by Regel, and in foal to the same sire, was sold for 55 guineas. The twelve brood mares averaged 30 guineas, the yearlings 12i guineas, the two-year-olds 361 guineas, and the three-year-olds 331 guineas. The following were the sales : — Brood Mares. Gs.
