According to recent files they have quite the equal of Tod Sloan, if not his superior, in America in a jockey named Maher. The Spirit of the Times of August 13 says that at a race meeting held at a place named Brighton, Maher carried off the riding honours. On the first day of the meeting he rode the first three winners, missed the fourth, and- captured the fifth. Next day Mahe' again put in good work, as he piloted five successive winners, thus establishing a new record. He did his best to make it six, but the attempt was fruitless, and he was so chagrined at his failure that he lost his temper and whipped his mount unmercifully, for which he was read a lecture by the stewards. The latest files also give a table of the jockeys, and by this I see that Maher had 296 mounts, out of which he carried 93 wire 50 seconds, 40 thirds, 113 times unplaced. Tod Sloan’s record was 194 mounts, 89 wins, 42 seconds, 21 thirds.
Mr Geurge Hope’s well-known horse, Penrose, has broken down badly, and it is feared that his racing career has ended. Hope had the horse very well, and it . is bad luck to be deprived of his services just now.
