HAWKES BAY.
Departure of horses — Tigress — Mr J. Vallance —Departures from, Hawke's Bay — Leaving for Riccarton —Stud news— Torpina—The breaking down of Penrose. Napier, October 25. Cceur de Lion and Tirant d’Eau, in charge of Edwards and Martin respectively, left by the Elingamite for the South on Friday. Tigress, the stable companion to the lion-hearted one, had to be left at home, as one of her legs has filled so badly that her return to the track will not take place for some time. The English gentleman horseman, Mr J Vallance, intends to be present at the spring meeting of the Auckland Racing Club next month. Hawke’s Bay will be extra well represented at the Poverty Bay Meeting this week at Gisborne, Jadoo, Donovan, and Aquatic having left for that place by the Te' Anau on Friday, and another complement, Amoureux, Barbarossa, Nukurau, Baccarat, Royal George, Fortrose, and Girofla
were dispatched by the Kai-Ora last night. Mr Danvers, the newly-appointed handicapper of the Gisborne racing bodies, also journeyed to the seat of hostilities by the same boat. Lochiel’s half-brother, General Thornton, has been sent to the Gisborne district, where he will be at the service of breeders. Capt. Russell has had an addition to his stock at Flaxmere, Lorelei having produced a bay colt to Strephon, and Katie Ferguson a brown filly to Gold Reef. Stewart Waddell and R. Gooseman, with their charges, leave for Riccarton this week. The latter takes down the Apremont—Nautilus filly, Mistra, but I have not been able to ascertain yet what string the Karamu trainer will have with him. Whisper, one of Mr George Hunter’s brood mares, has given birth to a brown filly by Apremont. Quilting is the name bestowed.by Mr Robinson on the half-brother, by Quilt, to Te Hapuku. Torpina has been sent up to Mr W. J. Douglas’ station, Te Mahanga, where he will be rested for some time. Penrose, it is stated, will never again be able to take his place under the starter’s hands. His breakdown was a very severe one, which was bad luck for his party, as George Hope, his trainer, informed me the other day that he was the best horse he had ever had under his tuition, and he has had some hummers. Nectar, who used to form one of the inmates of his lodge, has been returned to his owner. The harsh manner in which some handicappers have dealt with Nukurau in hack events has dedecided his owners to withdraw him from that line of events, for after competing at the Poverty Bay Club’s meeting he will for the future be nominated in open races. Little Billee, who has been resting in the country for some months past, reached Napier to-day en route for A. Vincent’s quarters at Greenmeadows, where he will resume active duties. Waterfall’s son looks none too gay, and it was a hard matter to recognise this fast equine celebrity with his country coat on. St. Mark, Mr Watts’ two year-old by St. Leger —Leorina, leaves by the Flora to-night for Auckland. He has gone away under W. Whitaker’s supervision.
