Training Notes.

AT ELLERSLIE. Very much increased activity has been observable at Ellerslie during the past week, and Mr Hill has to be up with the first streaks of daylight in the east to open the gates for the patrons of the training track. Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays are the favored mornings for interesting work, and it is on these days that the pipe openers are indulged in. The veteran, Jack Chaafe, is generally the first in evidence, but on Saturday morning last he was forestalled by Hylas (tiatman up), Waiorongomai (Bird), and Lillie (Duff), and this trio put in a capital gallop. It was just five o’clock when they appeared on the track, and went once round at a steady pace, when they struck out for a merry mile, at the end of which Lillie had the advantage over Waiorongomai, while the Guineas candidate was beaten off. St. Paul, who, on Thursday morning, had done a capital gallop of two miles, danced on to the course as merrily as ever, and was sent a strong two miles. The little bounder revels in his work. St. Peter, with young Sid Chaafe up, cast six furlongs behind him in great style. St. Paul’s brother is undoubtedly a beautiful mover, and he should add fresh lustre to the names of his sire and dam, St. Leger and Satanella. Picklock, with Gall up, and Lufra, steered by a stable lad, negotiated a sound

circuit. Reaction, who is moving very well just now, beat the Hotchkiss —Pandora filly once round very easily. A chestnut by Nelson and a bay colt by The Workman did serviceable work. Bacchus and Khama were slipped together, and moved very nicely, although not at their top. Korowai travelled faster than Record Reign once round. St. Lawrence negotiated a round in 2min 15sec, a performance that was exactly repeated shortly afterwards by Knight of Athol. St. Elmo is a wonderfully good track horse, and he pleased the touts by the way in which he covered a mile outside the hurdles in Imm 56sec. St. Simon, after exercising, spurted three furlongs. He looks quite sound again, and it is to be hoped that he will reward Mr Skipwith’s patience Caetoria had the best of a gallop with Firearm, but on track form neither of them are any good. St. Hippo, who is again in the hands of his old mentor, George Wright, cantered. Miss Rose, looking as pretty as ever, spurted three furlongs in good time. Bluejacket and Canopus galloped once round at a good working pace The former, who is in the Guineas, appears to have wintered well. These two are now in Fred Stenning’s stable. Canopus, since he appeared in public last year, has been added to the list. Eton finished in front of Manola and Dayntreb in a good go of ouce round. The grey colt appeared to be all out at the finish. All Jack Chaafe’s lot exercised. After breakfast .Tim Kean beat Lady Cuisine in a half mile spin, and Hastings, with Gallagher üb, strode along in attractive style. In the afternoon South Pacific (R. Hall) and Bonnie Blue (Munro) were treated to a couple of miles over the big fences. Both jumped well, South Pacific having the best of the gallop. St. Simon, Tim, and Merry Maid were sent out for a mile and a half over the timber, but Merry Maid did not take kindly to the game, and refused to jump. The other pair, however, acquitted themselves well. Monday was an off morning, the only horse to be extended being Markinch. On Tuesday morning Jack Chaafe was early out, and St. Paul was treated to another two miles, and it will give some idea as to his condition when it is stated that the last circuit was done in 2min lOsec, while immediately afterwards it took Eton and Coronet 2min 16sec to do the same distance. St. Paul pulled up as sound and as fresh as ever, and the gallop is one that should give his friends confidence. St. Elmo was extended for a really good gallop over a mile, and Waiorongomai followed suit. Markinch is an improved horse, and was sent a good serviceable once round. St. Peter negotiated in beautiful style four furlongs outside the hurdles in exceptionally fine time, considering the distance the hurdles were out, of 55sec. When the public see this colt move they will be enamoured of him. It took St. Lawrence 2min 16sec to get once round, and Explosion’s time was 4sec longer. Knight of Athol did a good working gallop. St. Hippo, looking big and lusty, was cantered. At present he is perfectly sound, and good judges think that he should stand a preparation. Panoply had no difficulty in disposing of Firearm and Castoria in succession, and the old Splendor gelding looks very well and hearty. The old hurdler, Disturbance, looking fat and well, was out for exercise. Reaction, who has come on a lot this season, did a smart gallop, while serviceable work was done by a host of others.
