[Own .Correspondent. 1 CANTERBURY. Sale of Gold Medallist —The winning double—Reported sale of Opae— Sale of blood stock —Betting—The C. C. programme. Christchurch, August 15. Gold Medallist has been sold to an English racing man, but his name has not transpired. The son of Medallion will be shipped home in the Rakaia in company with Waiuku. The double, Dummy and Social Pest, was extensively backed in Christchurch. One syndicate backed this double to win £3,000, and our well-known Riccarton trainer-jockey, who has frequently ridden Liberator to victory, is enriched to the extent of about £9OO. Bill Atyeolaid about £BOO in various amounts, while Barnett and Grant had nearly £l,OOO m their boak here. It is stated that Opae has been purchased by J. Hickey on behalf of Mr S. H. Gollan, and that the horse will be shipped to England next month. At a sale of blood stock to-day Versailles, a New Zealand Cup horse, was sold to Mr H. Thomson, of Riccarton, for 26gs ; Headford to C. Clark for 28gs; Off-Chance, 50gs, to J. R. Forbes, of Taieri; Huntingdon, 42gs, to H. McLean; Kowai, 25gs, to W. Hawkins; Wimbledon, 9gs, to Mr Rowe; Angler, 19 guineas, to Mr Weld ; Slaiden, lOgs, to W. Mitchell; Lady Spec, 44gs, to Mr Holmes. The trotting horses sold to-day were Little Willie, 26gs, R. Logan; St. George, 14gs, Plan, 25gs, J. McEwen,. Dunedin ; Isabel, Sigs, W. Henry. Betting on the New Zealand Cup has been limited to a few small lines. O’Brien’s twocolts, also Goldleaf and a few others have been, backed for a few hundreds at a hundred to threeand four. D. Rutherferd was the largest prize winner at the National Meeting, his cheque amounting to £5lO. The other payments were : F. Watson £5OO, R. Higgie £175, H. G. Pitt £138; W. Davies £llO, W. A. Donald £llO ; and T. Jones £lOO. August 17. I now confirm the news sent yesterday that Hickey had bought Opae from Mr McDonald. Hickey has aiso bought Toriki for Mr S. H. Gollan. It is probable that some more good horses will be bought to go to England before the end of the month. I believe I was the most successful sporting writer who attempted to select winners at the National Meeting. My selection for the Steeplechase was Rhino, who got second, and for the Hurdle Race I got on the winner, Social Pest. Dundonald, who won the Enfield Steeplechase, was one of the three 1 selected for that race, Penrose won the Maiden Hurdles, and St. Cyr the Ladies’ Bracelet. The South Canterbury Jockey Club has received capital nominations for their spring meeting. There are nine in the Timaru Cup, including the N.Z. Cup horses Double Event, Sequin, Cannonshot, and Seabrook. Some North Island horses, St. Hiko, Castashore, Swordfish, and Napoleon, have been entered.
