OTAGO.
Death of G: M. Bell —Sam Allen and the new gaol'—Sale of Barmby — Bed Lancer — Plotter — Emmeline in foal.
Dunedin, June 14.
Mr G. M. Bell, of Wantwood, Southland, died last week. He was a very prominent sportsman for many years in his district, being at times president of several racing clubs. Mr S. Allen, of Victoria, well-known in connection with the Parthenopmus case, is at present on a visit to Dunedin. Yesterday, in company with Mr E. Lyons, a well-known Dunedin sport, and former owner of many horses here, he visited the new gaol recently erected in Dunedin, and wnich was thrown open to public inspection. During their peregrination of the new institution they entered the interior bf a cell, when some wag for fun promptly closed the door on them, and there they had to remain for some time before the warder could be found to release them. On? of the victims so jokingly incarcerated took it in good part, while his mate in durance vile has since been going the rounds of Dunedin looking for a scalp. Barmby was sold in Gore last Saturday for' 100 guineas, and is very likely to stand a preparation for next season’s racing. He was a real good one a couple of seasons ago. Bed Lancer is not to be taken up till September, not having yet worn off his lameness. Plotter has undergone a successful operation for the removal of the lump that had formed in his throat, and his trainer has every hope of getting him into his last season’s form again. There is not the least doubt that it greatly militated against his racing. Emmeline is proved beyond doubt to be in foal to Gipsy Grand. Our horses have gone into winter quarters, so there is no training at the Forbury.
