AQUATIOS

[By

Muritai.]

The general handicap'race of the North Shore Sailing Club, postponed from the previous week, was held last Saturday, for the cup presented by Mr James Dunning (owner of Gloriana). A good breeze was blowing from southward, but at times was rather unsteady. The course was from flag-boat near Victoria Wharf, round North Head and out to black buoy at Rangitoto, back to Southern Cross moorings, across to buoy off dock, finishing at starting point; about ten miles. The following boats started :—- Ladye Wilma, Imin; Ngaru, 6min ■ Zinita, 6min; Mahaki, Bmin ; Undine, 12min ; Rogue, 17min ; Mavis, 25min ; Edna, 29min ; Seabreeze, 30min ; Corea, 35min; Uno, 37min, Ngaru got a flying start, Mahaki, Rogue, and I adie Wilma being last away. This order, however, did not last long, as Zinita rounded the Rangitoto mark first, closely followed by Ladye Wylma and Ngaru. Rounding Southern Cross moorings Ladye Wilma was 4min ahead of Zinita, Mahaki third, Ngaru fourth. The times at the finish were : —Ladye Wilma, 4hr 27min 35sec ; Zinita, 4hr 31min55sec; Mahaki, 4hr 32min 50sec; Ngaru, 4hr 33min 20sec; Rogue, 4hr 39min 40eec; Undine, 4br 39min 45sec; Mavis, 4hr 44min 55sec ; Edna, 4hr49min. The others did not finish. The leniently handicapped Mavis therefore wins the cup on time, Edna second, Rogue third.

The University boat race was rowed on the I Thames last Saturday under very unfavorable I circumstances, when the Oxford representatives again showed their superiority over the Cantabs, 1 winning by about twelve lengths. A strong gale ! was blowing, and the boats had to be filled with air-bladders to prevent them swamping. Oxford won the toss, and selected the Middlesex side, which was most sheltered. At the finish the Cambridge men were exhausted, their boat being nearly full, but the Oxford boat had shipped considerably less water. Time. 22min 15sec. This puts Oxford about ten wins ahead.

On Saturday next the West End Rowing Club holds another of its popular “At Homes,” when trial fours will be rowed for trophies presented by Mr Kirker. Twenty crews will compete, and the first heat starts at two o’clock sharp. The newly organised swimming club at North Shore will hold its first meeting in Calliope Dock On Saturday next, when among other races, will be contested the Club Championship. The gathering is only a semi public one. The club is already over 100 strong.
