League of New Zealand Wheelmen’s Definition z of a Cyclist. Amateur Definition. An Amateur is one who is the holder of an amateur licence from this League, and who has—a. Neverengaged in, nor assisted in, nor taught any swimming, athletic, or cycling exercise for money or other remuneration, b. Never knowingly competed with or against a person who does not hold a licence under the Amateur Definition of this League for a prize of any description, or in any cycle event in public, except where permission is granted by the League, c. Never made pace for, or been paced by, a person who does not hold a licence under this League, or for or by a person under suspension, d. Never sold, realised upon, or otherwise converted into cash, any prize won by him. e. Never accepted, directly or indirectly, any remuneration, compensation, or expenses whatever from a cycle manufacturer, agent, sport promoter, dr bther person interested in the trade or sport, for cycle riding, except where special permission is granted by the League. Cash Definition. A Cash Cyclist is one who is the holder of a licence under this League, and ceases to he eligible by—a. Engaging in cycle racing, or training or coaching any person therein, as a means of obtaining a livelihood, b. Or competing against any person who does not hold a licence under the Cash Definition of this League, except where . permission is granted by the League, c. Making pace for, or being paced by, a person who does not hold, a licence under this League, or for or by a person under suspension; FIXTURES. March 24, 26 —N.Z. Championship Meeting at Dunedin April B—Christchurch Cycling Club (Good Friday Meeting) The committee of the Hawera Cycling Club has decided to alter the date of their annual meetingjto the 16th April, nominalions to close on Ist April. E. Reynolds, the ex-amateur champion, made his first public appearance at Dunedin on Saturday after his visit to Australia. In the Half Mile Dash Reynolds won by a yard after a very fine race from Hanley and Alios. Five other competitors started in this event, including the other Reynolds, the Irishman. In the Provincial Championship (three miles), all the prominent cash riders competed. Victory rested with E. Reynolds, who won by four yards ffom. Maxwell, A. R. Barker being third, a yard away. Amongst the starters were H. Reynolds, the Irish champion, Clarkson, Graham, Wall, Double, Sutherland, Campbell, and Porter. In the Dunedin Wheel Race (two miles), A Rolston, with 120yds start, won, after a good finish with Holmes and Graham, by two yards. ; Graham, on the 110yds mark, was thought to have a very good show in this event, but though he rode very well indeed, he could only get third. Some six thousand people attended the sports, and though the principal events were won by Reynolds, the Dunedinites were very enthusiastic. The track was in very fair order, and altogether the meeting was a great success. Mr Platt-Betts further reduced the time for 10 miles on the Sydney Cricket Ground (says the Sydney livening Hews of Feb. 3rd). The weather was suitable for record breaking, and the English crack, from a standing start, did the first quarter-mile in 33sec . half-mile, 58sec ;■ three-quarter mile, Imin 24 3-ssec ; one mile, Imin 51 2-ssec; two miles, 3min 42isec ; three miles, smin 35sec; four miles, 7min 28 4-ssec ; five miles, 9min 28sec; six miles, llmin 18 2-ssec; seven miles, 13min 12isec ; eight miles, 15min 7 l-ssec ; nine miles, 17min 2 l-ssec ; ten miles, 18min 54 3-ssec. This defeats the previous record by 22 2 ssec. Betts then tried for a mile, and it was clocked in Imin 40sec.
