NAPIER STUD NEWS.

Denbigh, The Painter mare who proved a good one over country a few years back, presented her owner the other day with a nice colt foal by Robinson Crusoe. Hon. J. D. Ormond’s has had Dauntless added to the list. Mr George Richardson’s brood] mare Nanakia and a daughter of Ingomar’s (who has not had a name bestowed upon her), and a full sister to Rivet (by Torpedo—Swiveline), have foaled, to the Musket horse Wonderland. The two former are fillies, the latter product being a colt, who, I am sorry to say, was born dead. , , . At Flaxmere Katinka has produced a chestnut colt foal to Spinfeldt, and Lorna a bay colt to St. Andrew at Karamu, the Hon. J. D. Ormond’s breeding quarters. Nixie has foaled a chestnut filly, Queen of Hearts a chestnut filly, Trentalto a chestnut colt, Spinnaker a chestnut colt, Flatter a brown filly—all to Dreadnought. Montmarte a chestnut colt to St. Andrew, and a daughter of Le Loup and G-abble a brown filly to Stepfelet.

™ “ The Wellesley Street Murder” is from the pen of Mr Collet-Dobson, and displays marked literary talent as well as stagecraft. It is strong equally in humour and emotional force. In every case the curtain falls on. telling situations. Her r Vaurismark’s scenery wins loud applause. There is a capital band under Mr. Ward, and no stage accessory is wanting. .Mr Dobson is immense as a comic Scot, and the cast including Miss Idrene Thornton (lovely dresses), Mrs Stuart Anderson, Misses Ada Vermont, Rose Parker, Mary Bruce, and Messrs Sherbourne, Newsom, Fort, Lorrigan, etc., etc., is large and competently filled. The introduced songs are quite a feature in the play, which should command success wherever played.

Mr Frank Marshall has written to us relative to the breeding of Lochinvar, who was awarded first prize for the best thoroughbred stallion at the Waikato Show. We will endeavour to supply the information from a reliable source, but it is not likely that an answer will be available for a week or two.

helped to a very great extent' «> 'puu’uuwu ultT . betting of minors with those bookies who were careless' enough to wager with youngsters. Although encouraging young fellows under age to bet is a habit to be deprecated, still there is this much to be said in defence of the bookmakers, many parents send their children with the money to stake as they would send them on any other errand, and it is naturally difficult for the penciller to discriminate.. The Spring meeting of the Auckland Racing Club will be long remembered by the followers of Mr Frank Macmenim’s stable. His success during the meeting has been almost unprecedented. Mr Macmanemin is only a young man, but thus early in his career he has demonstrated most conclusively what a conscientious and painstaking man may do on the turf. At the time of writing his horses have won nine races, and next week, when we have the records at our command, we will have something more to say.

To Sylvia Park the credit belongs of producing the most promising colts of the season. Hylas’ victory in the Musket Stakes stamps St. Hippo as a most promising sire. The youngster bears a strong resemblance to his parent, and was selected last year by the Sporting Review as the pick of the yearlings. He is a very big colt, and it is is only reasonable to expect that he will improve immensely with age and careful usage. Explosion, who finished second to Hylas, was also bred by the Messrs. Nathan Bros, and is likewise a big colt, who will come on with age. During the Auckland meeting the detectives, evidently in want of employment elsewhere, have been in evidence at Ellerslie. It is so much easier to catch a bookmaker tripping than it is to collar a burglar—and a lot safer work, too.
