WELLINGTON. Kingan’s triumph — Sir Agnes — Other returns. Wellington, August 16. Bob Kingan’s reappearance atßiccarton (where he had previously been connected with H. Lunn’s stable) was particularly successful. He brought the Grand National Hurdle Race to this district for the first time, by the aid of Umslopogaas, who is owned by a local sport who races under the nom de course of Mr G. Williams, and whose daughter is the fair owner of Huntingdon. Umslopogaas’ sire, Puritan, is by Cassilvanus, sire of Master Agnes, whom I suggested should be exchanged for Gipsy King. “ Slops,” as the gelding is called for short, was bred in the Nelson district. Kingan’s other string, Violence, won the Enfield Steeplechase easily enough, but in the Beaufort had to succumb to The Friar, who had previously beaten Violence at the Hutt. Mr Corlett brought Sir Agnes back from Christchurch yesterday, and went home to-day. A. Peters returned from Riccarton yesterday, after an unsuccessful trip. Josh. Prosser only started Boreas on the second day, when he had an easy victory in the August Handicap. Certainly the most unlucky of the Northern contingent at Riccarton was Dromedary, who, getting to the end of the National journey and looking nil over a winner, should have been stopped by collision with a policeman. The daughter of Voltigeur, Lady .Ellen, was most unlucky during the past season, but would have won a pot of money in Australia. She returned from the South yesterday, and has gone home to the Wairarapa.
