CANTERBURY. Betting business —The New Zealand Cup Handicaps. Christchurch, June 15. Talking with Mr Barnett, of Barnett and Grant, to-day, that gentleman informed me that while in the North Island last week he didia good deal of business in connection with the New Zealand Cup. All the Auckland horses nominated for the Cup have been backed through him and other pencillers. The training track at Riccarton, owing to severe frosts, is at present very hard, and the work done has not been important. Telemeter has been backed for a considerable sum by his connections to win the N.Z. Cup. A fortnight ago I mentioned that a local sportsman, when asked to pick the winner of the N.Z. Cup in three, named Lorelei, Light, and Telemeter. The two first-named have not been nominated. He now regrets that he threw away £lO. He has, however, decided to back Telemeter, with the idea that he will get back his £lO and a little more. The same gent, has also backed Primula. The day is drawing nearer when we shall be able to discuss Mr Henry’s handicaps for the N.Z. Cup. The general opinion seems to be that Euroclydon will head the list at 9.10, with Daystar and St. Paul next at about 9.0.
