ONEHUNGA HACK RACES.
The Onehunga Hack Racing Club held its annual meeting on the Recreation Reserve on Saturday. Some of the Onehunga people had expressed displeasure with the Council for having granted the Reserve for the occasion, and it was expected that some unpleasantness would occur, but such was not the case, and the shillings demanded at the gate were paid with little or no murmur. It was what was called open play amongst the bookmakers —Tattersall’s member s joining issue with those who are not in the fold in laying the odds. For once in a way we heard no complaints of welching, and it was satisfactory to note that there were more police present than at Otahuhu the w'eek previously. The following are the results of the racing:— Maiden Hack Race of 4 sovs, six furlongs.— Mr E. Gunning’s Stenson, 1; Mr F. Walker’s Napoleon, 2; Mr J. Hogan’s Lady’s Maid, 3. Other starters: New Boy, Miss Derritt, Larissa, Half-Caste, and Tarara. Won by two lengths. No official time was takeri for this or the other races. Hurdle Race of 6 sovs, one mile and a half. —Mr C. Neeve’s Murewai (late Larrikin), 1; Mr F. Walker’s Napoleon, 2. Other starters: Deceiver, Matapo, Whatea, and Miss Derrett. Won by more than fifty yards. Two-mile Trot of 4 sovs.—Mr W. Matthew’s Little May, 1 ; Mr G. Elkington’s Wairaki, 2 ; Mr T. Hayr’s Gipsy, 3. Other starters : Belle Brandon, Snowball, Little Willie, Dolly, MoHy, Henie, Polly, and Jenny. Little May, who trotted steadily, won by twenty or thirty lengths, Gipsy a poor third. Onehunga Cup of 10 sovs, one mile —Mr C. Neeve’s Murewai (late Larrikin) 1, Mr E. Lupton’s Maori Boy 2, Mr L. Beeson’s New Boy 3. Other starters : No Name, Deceiver, My Sweetheart, Lady’s Maid, and Capel. Won by a couple of lengths, New Boy a length away third. Pony Race of 4 sovs, four furlongs. —Mr E. Gunning’s Stenson 1, Mr C. J. Richards’ Mateheel 2. Nine others started. After Stenson took command the issue was never in doubt. Flying Handicap of 5 sovs, five furlongs. — Mr E.
