Our Illustrations

A capital likeness of Mrs. Frank Roohe is sure to catch the eye of all who have a love for the beautiful. Mrs. Roche, who takes the exacting title role in “ Princess Ida,” is an accomplished vocalist, especially in dramatic work. She studied the part she is now playing with Miss Nellie Stewart, and is confidently expected to make a brilliant artistic success, both vocal and histrionic. Our horse pictures are illustrations of Blaircarrig (a peculiarly-marked chestnut son of Blairgowrie), Dentist, and Donovan. Dentist has not yet made a name for himself, but it will be remembered that he caused a mild sensation at the last meeting at North Shore, when he beat his field in the Maiden Hurdles, but was disqualified for crossing. He is in good hands, and we may hear of him again before the winter is over. Donovan is a remarkably fine-looking horse, owned by Mr A. Standish, of New Plymouth, and why he has not up to the present time been more successful on the Turf puzzles those who are judges of a well-formed thoroughbred. We give the portrait of Desna, one of the greatest cyclists of the age ; he is a Frenchman and has just recently visited Australia, where, besides making a host of friends, he has succeeded in smashing a great many Australian records. The Frenchman passed through Auckland last week en route to America. The other picture —that of Mr Mann--is referred to in our Licensed Victuallers columns.
