GOLF

During the past week a large number of players have been on the rinks, and the weather having been beautifully fine the rinks have improved greatly, and their caudition was consequently very good. The greens have been specially topdressed, and the committee has gone to considerable expense to get them info first-class condition for the New Zealand Tournament, which we would remind our readers commences on Tuesday, May 18th. No replies have been received as yet from the South Island clubs, but is hoped that their entries will have come to hand next week. The semi-final round of the local club championship was played last week. On Thursday Mr Kyd met Mr Flint and beat him by four up and two to play. Neither player was in very good form, but several brilliant holes were played. On Saturday Mr Gillies met Mr Walker. The former player took the first four holes in succession and soon establihsed such a lead that when the score reached 6 up and 8 to play in favour of Mr Gillies, Mr Walker retired. The final will be played on Saturday next between Mr Gillies and Mr Kyd. On Saturday a handicap match will also be played, for which first and second prizes will be offered. The committee hope that a large number of entries will be sent in, as it is desirable that a general handicap for members of the Club should be framed.
