OTAGO.
The Christchurch autumn handicaps— North Otago races. Dunedin, March 23. The weights for the Great Easter and Autumn Handicaps at Christchurch is generally the precursor of plenty of double and straight-out betting in Dunedin. A couple of firms here have a £5OO book on the double. Euroclydon, the top weight in both handicaps, will not be a competitor. Goldspur, Black and Red, and Belle Clair have big local support for the seven furlong race, Black and Red being singled out as one of the best treated horses in it, and is consequently picked for first leg. The Great Autumn favourites are Mannlicher, Lord Rosslyn, Leda, Chaos, and Marquis of Zetland. Missfire is undoubtedly well treated. He is a horse nearly as big as Euroclydon, and well bred, and with his 6.10 he, also, is receiving support. The foregoing double is, perhaps, the biggest investing item of the racing season here. The North Otago races, run to-day, are usually productive of big speculation, but this year there is a great falling off, the fields of competitors in the open events being small. Maremma struck himself a couple of days ago, and had to be withdrawn. The following are the results to hand to-night: —Hurdles, Higlander; Maiden, Mount Clair; Anniversary Handicap, Rancour; North Otago Cup, Marlin; Novel Hnndicap, Stockfish; Flying Handicap, Telemeter. The latter paid over ten pounds, and beat a field of eight starters, including Goldspur, Vanilla, Rancour, Plotter, Senior Wrangler, Molly Darling, and Lady Lear. This was the best field of the day. There is a report in town that Mr Craig’s horses will shortly be placed on the sale list. This, of course, includes Euroclydon.
