Entries for the Amateur Athletic Club’s carnival of November 3lst — Saturday week —closed with the secretary, Mr W. C. Speight, last Saturday evening at the Metropolitan Hotel. In point of number the figures are eminently satisfactory, and compare more than favourably with those received for the November carnival last season. As usual the sprint events, 100yds, 250yds, and 440yds handicaps, are the most liberally patronised, the entries being respectively 33, 30, and 25. Included in the entries are several outsiders, principally from Christchurch, Gisborne, and Napier. Evidently E. EE Creamer, our champion walker, has not been able to stand the preparation, as his name does not figure amongst the entrants for either of the walking events. Williamson, who has during the last twelve months brought himself into prominence here over sprint and intermediate distances, and has some good performances to his credit on the Auckland Amateur Athletic Club’s register, has been transferred to Wellington. He was also well known in cricket circles, being a member of the Gordon Senior Eleven. Our loss is the windy city’s gain. Another notable absentee from the Amateur Athletic Club’s entries is W. H. Martin, who I expected to see figuring in both the 120yds and 440yds hurdles. The battle between the two champions —Martin and Roberts —both of whom claim to be the better all-round man of the two was looked forward to as one of the features. Mr Martin, a reason for your absence, please ? ■Handicaps s for the A.A.A. and C.’C. carnival are due to-day, and acceptances close on Saturday night at the Metropolitan Hotel. E. 0. Cuff, younger brother of L A. Cuff of that ilk, will try conclusions with the local men in the sprint events of the A.A.A. and C.C. carnival of November 21Bt. .The pedestrian events in connection with the Auckland Cycling Club’s carnival are brimful of entries, and judging by the talent engaged should also be brimful of interest and well fought contests. The Eight Hours’ League advertise the grand gala (Eight Hours’ Demon stration Meeting) for Saturday, December sth, and a big programme, in which £lOO will be paid away in prizes, is promised. In addition to the usual pedestrian events there will be races for amateurs, both foot and wheel.
