NOTES.

[By

Gipsy King.]

Wanganui, October 23. Mr E. Browne, of Palmerston North, has sold Leander (Natator —Queen Margaret) to a Gisborne sport, and the full brother to Nat will be raced in that district in future. Palmistry (by Gipsy King—Lula, sister to Couranto), who raced in hack company last year, was found dead at Danevirke a few days ago. I am glad to say that Irish Twist’s break-down is not of a permanent nature. He struck himself on the tendon of the near foreleg, and it “ filled” slightly, but he did not go lame on it. It was decided to stop him in his work, and apply a mild blister rather than court a break-down. The son of Ingomar will be put in commission again in two or three weeks, as his leg is now as clean as a whistle, and as cool as a cucumber. Novelty (Puriri —Dead Shot), the full sister to Jenny, who was engaged at the Wanganui Meeting, was not able to fulfil her engagements through an old barb-wire injury breaking out just when Wheeler had her in capital trim to commence the season’s racing, but I am glad to hear she is not likely to be incapacitated for long. She is a good mare, and it would be a pity, if after having wintered well, she were not able to face the starter. Mr J. R. McDonald, of Levin, who owns Kapua, has sent Titaki (by Puriri) and Tokatea (by Torpedo) to W. Holmes to be trained for future engagements. Everyone is pleased to see Mr McDonald having a turn of luck with Kapua. He has waited patiently for the Mute gelding to come back to his form. Jack Maher’s patience, too, must have been pretty well tested, but he now has Kapua as fit as the proverbial fiddle. I have seen few easier wins -than Kapua’s in the First Hurdle Race at Wanganui, but the time, 4min 9sec, must not be accepted as for “two miles and a distance.” The correct cards stated “ about two miles and a distance.” George, the well-known light-weight jockey, has sold his hack-racing mare Provoke, by Puriri —Revoke, to Mr Barney ; Cole at a satisfactory price. Mr John Green, of Marton, has sold .his hack hurdle gelding Gipsy Prince, by Gipsy King — Gipsy, to Mr R. H. Skipwith, of Auckland. The latter gave a tidy price for the big black gelding, who bears a close resemblance to the crosscountry horse Chris, . There is very little probability of Crimson Streak, and Mano’-War fulfilling their New Zealand Cup engagement. Lotion and probably Ngatuere will leave Wanganui for Riccarton next week. Voltigeur will also go.
