GOLF.
On Saturday last the usual monthly competition for the president’s cleek was played, but the recent rains had made the links so soft and sloppy that mudlarking would have been a more appropriate name than golf. However, this in no way detracts from the meritorious win of Mr Kyd, who defied the elements and returned a really good score. The Rev. Mr Beatty was second, but the others were nowhere. The following were the scores . —
The membership, of the local club is gradually increasing, and eight new members were elected at Saturday’s meeting. At a meeting of the club members on the same afternoon the entrance fee was unanimously raised from one to three guineas. The opening of the Auckland Ladies Golf Club at Epsom took place on Wednesday afternoon by the president (Mrs Street) presenting two balls to four gentlemen of the Auckland Golf Club, with which to play the opening match of the Club. The match was followed by a large number of ladies, who watched the play very keenly. The links consist of nine very good holes. Afternoon tea was served in the comfortable little clubhouse. The match between Wellington and Manawatu, played on the Wellington Links, was won easily by the Wellington Club. The teams were seven aside, and the Wellington players won all their games, the aggregate majority being 47.
