GOLF.

A large number of players were on the links last Saturday, and among them were several officers from the warships and a party from Government House. Owing to the late arrival of the Rapid, and Major Elliot being up-country, the match between . Government House, the fleet, and visitors, fell through. This match was looked forward to with much interest, as the club’s opponents could have put a strong team in the field. A number of the officers of the warships are very keen beginners, apd not even the rain of Monday prevented a number of them playing on that day. Several good foursomes were played on Saturday, especially that of Messrs O’Rorke and Gillies against Dr Craig (H-M.S. Rapid) and Mr Colbeck. The former pair were seven’ down and eight to play, but by a big effort won the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, sth, and 6th holes in succession. The lead, however, was too great, and the Dr and his partner won by 3 up and 2to play. Dr Craig is an old Carnoustie player, and is a brother-in-law of Lient. Macfarlane, who constantly partners his . famous golfing brother officer, Lieut. Fred. Tait. The Dr. plays a very strong game. Mr Gillies, having defeated Mr. .O’Rorke in the semi-final of the championship, he had to meet Mr Colbeck in the final on Monday, the 25th. Mr Colbeck was playing rather below his game, and Mr Gillies played very perfect golf. Mr Gillies won the match in a rather hollow fashion by 12 up and 11 to play, and is the champion of the club for the year, and it was generally predicted he would be.
