AQUATICS.

The West End Rowing Club’s carnival of Saturday last was a decided success in every respect, there being a large attendance present. Capital sport provided and Queen’s weather for all those present to enjoy the fun in. The several heats in the gig race for the gold bracelet, presented by honorary members, produced exciting and close racing in almost every instance, and the final was a stunning go, Harris’ crew only managing to squeeze home by half-a-length in good time from Darby’s crew, who, by the way, had had more" taken out of them in getting into the final. The crews and their nominators were. —Winners: P. ". Harris (stroke), Miss Eva Harris ; J. A. Peacock (3), Miss Peacock; W. H. Bartlett (2), Miss Gretchen ; G. Main (1), Miss Main ; Dawson Hanna (cox), Mrs Hanna. Second crew: J. Darby (stroke), Mrs Darby ; J. Gordon (3), Miss Gordon ; G. Mills" (2), Miss Mills; R. Wilson (1), Miss Wilson; L. Sheppard (cox), Mrs Sheppard. The second crew get the set of Club’s jerseys, presented by Mr W. Morpeth of Ponsonby. There was any amount of other amusements, including swimming tub races, duck hunts, and greasy boom; and those laughable events kept all present in highly good humour.

The whole of the deserve praise for the manner in which they worked to ensure success, and a pleasing feature of the afternoon was the presentation to Mr S. Hanna, a recognition of his services in connection with the last Ponsonby Regatta. The Otago Bowing Association met on March 30th. and decided to guarantee the sum of £‘2o towards the expense of sending a new Zealand Representative Crew to the Australian Championship Rowing Meeting. The Final Heat of the Dunedin Amateur Boating Clubs, Hyam’s Fours, for a Challenge Cup and gold trophies was decided on Tuesday last. The water was very favourable, and a splendid finish resulted, as follows : —Karaka —C. Columb (stroke), T. Bailey (3), W. Connor (2), A. Hall (b n w), P. Grierson (cox), 1. Konini—J. Isaacs (stroke), T. Hendry (3), R. Eagle (2), W. Wilhelmson (bow), Montgomery (cox), f. Kowhai—J. Williams (stroke), T. Scott (3), G. Anderson (2), G. Scurr (bow), J. Moffatt (cox), f. Korari —H. Hanlon (stroke), H. Davie (3), T. Scurr (2), F. C. Dawson (bow), Lichtenstein (cox), 4. Hanlon’s crew made the pace for a long distance, when the others caught up to his boat, then Isaac’s crew looked dangerous, when Columb brought his boat with a rush, and won by half a boat’s length, Williams’ crew just managed to get up on the post, and made a dead heat for second place. The Napier Rowing Club’s open fours, one mile, was rowed on the inner harbour last Saturday. In the first heat W. J. Reid stroke, R. H. Ashcroft 3, A. A. Cornford 2, A. G. Saxby bow, and R. St. Clair cox, rowed F. Jago stroke, W. Prentice 3, J. S. Thompson 2, N. Heath bow, Stanley Jago cox. Reid’s crew won by two lengths, in Bmin. 7sec The second heat was between M. T. Weisman stroke H. Jacobi 3, C. Smith 2, C. Roulston bow, R. St. Clair cox. W. R. Cooper stroke, C. W. Nicholls 3, F. P. St. Hill 2, J. Craig bow, Stanley Jagocox- Weisman’s crew won by three-quarters of a length.
