NOTES.

[By

Gipsy King.

The Wanganui Jockey Club voted £l5O to the Wanganui Hospital Building Fund, which the Government are supplementing £l for £l. It is just on the cards that St. Paul and Armilia, who are said to have a mortgage on the Two-Year-Old Stakes at Wanganui, may be beaten. Anyway if either win a bird whispers to me that they will have to break all previous records for the race. I like public performers, though. Public estimation of a good horse. — Taranaki Jockey Club Handicap, one mile and a half. Totalisator investmentson Fabulist, 291. Autumn Handicap, one mile and a quarter —55 investors. If, as Mr Stead says, Fabulist is a 71b better horse than Euroclydon, how much money would have been invested on Euroclydon the second day at Taranaki assuming he started under the same conditions. W. H. Keith has decided to train the team he has recently got together at Hawera. J. Taggart, of Lower Hutt, has purchased Disraeli from Mr G. H. Gibson. ‘‘Jerry” McHugh is now training Fish Oh (Foul Shot—Fish Lass) at Hawera. C. Woodley is now in the employ of Mr S. M. Baker, at Wanganui, and is looking after The Artist, who is located at Flemington Lodge the residence of the late Mr Sam Powell. When 1 mentioned that Irish Twist was to be taken in hand again I did not suggest that the son of Ingomar was “ sound ” again as some contemporaries have put it. The horse has only been taken up to see if he has benefited by his spell, and of course it is just as likely as not he may be turned out again. He had a mild blister applied to one of his legs last week. A race meeting without the totalisator will be held at Himatangi (near* Foxton) on March 10th. I regret to have to chronicle the death of Mr Frank Hill.of Wanganui, who, with his late partner Mr J. Poole, conducted the working of the totalisators on the Wanganui coast for many years. Mr Hill died at Wanganui on Wednesday, and wlten the news was received at the Manawatu meeting the flags on the course were lowered half-mast as a mark of respect, Mr Hill having been the successful tenderer for the totalisator business at the Manawatu meetings for many years. Mr Hill leaves a large family, and general sympathy is expressed for them in their sad bereavement.

Alf. Shearsby is now training Hesitation (Gipsy King —Vacillation) at Palmerston North, and I trust now that he has a nest egg as it were that he will soon get a team of horses together. At the Manawatu races Reality (by Somaue— Pearl) was sold by auction and realised £29, Mr L. Abraham of Palmerston North being the purchaser.

Disraeli, who ran a dead heat with Slumber in the Second Hack Race, was also submitted, but returned to his owner.

Leda is a strong tip for the Wanganui Cup, but my pick is Brooklet or Lady Zetland with a preference for the former, if the soreness she exhibited at Egmont has worn off her. Judging by comments from visitors who were at the Manawatu meeting, they think the disqualifications passed at the meeting were hardly justified. The Manawatu Racing Club have decided to re-open the case next week re the disqualification of Rangipai and the trainer of Glenelg. Rangipai will be able to start at Wanganni. The Polo Tournament takes place at Palmerston North on March 12th and following days. Twelve senior teams have nominated for the Saville Cup and nine teams for the Junior Cup. Gymkana sports will be held on the Palmerston North racecourse on the 24th inst. Besides the usual competitions there will be a half-mile Manawatu Cup, Hurdle Race, and Steeplechase. Owing to not getting a totalisator permit the Sandon Club will not hold their race-meeting on the 17th inst. She Premier informed a friend here that there is not a permit available at present. Owners, therefore, should turn their attention to the Bell Block programme. Mr J. O’Halloran, of Bulls, has purchased that fast half-mile hack racer, Marama Isaak Walton —Lillian).

A petition to the Manawatu Racing Club, asking them to re-open the case re the disqualification of Rangipai, has been numerously signed. A strange thing in connection with the mare’s disqualification, and the return of the money to nvestors, is that the owi.er of Rangipai gets his £lO which he put on the mare returned to him. The mare was backed by her owner on both days for the same amount, viz., £lO. Another singular thing occurred at the Manawatu Meeting. A well-known sport, who has leased a certain horse to an equally well-known trainer, wanted to enter a pro’est against the horse (his own) for inconsistent running at the meeting. The protest was not accepted. If the Sandon Club does not get a totalisator permit, the club will probably reduce the stakes slightly and hold the moeting, and license bookmakers. The Sandon Meeting has been well attended, and the average totalisator investments is £3OOO, so that the bookmakers ought to do a big business. Mr L. Abraham did not keep Reality (Somnus — Pearl) long after he purchased her at the Manawatu Meeting. The winner of the Foxton Flying has been purchased by Mr C. Hawkins, of Palmerston North, who owns the hurdle horse Unity. The Hawera Morning Post's account of the accident in the Egmont, which appeared in last wei k’s Review, is not correct . Prioress was not. in the front, and consequently did not interfere in any way with Anita. Prioress was the last animal to fall, so that she could not have been very close to Anita. There was another yarn in circulation that “ Prioress bad stuck her toes in ” and caused the accident. This is all moonshine, and about as true as the P6st's account.

An advertisement in one of the Palmerston North papers last week announced that Mr J. H. Pollock was willing to undertake the duty of handicapping for either racing or trotting dubs. E. Penman has the hack hurdle gelding Tenby (Remington — Lady Ellen) in work at Palmerston North. Tenby has been enjoying a spell for i long time. Albert Lytord is now training Crepon, a three-year-old filly by Forester - Cremorne, and Reality. The latter requires a short spell.
