January 27. Pitch and Toss leaves for Riccarton to-morrow to fulfil engagements there next Saturday. Belle Clair left, for the same place last week. The party behind Ilex, winner of the Publican’s Handicap at Lawrence, scored a big win over it. Commissions in support were executed throughout the colony. Close on £5OO was secured in Dunedin alone, and (he dividend, £6 13s, created a great surprise. It is stated that upwards of a thousand was won. Ilex ran in the interest, of an Oarnaru syndicate, who arc large backers. Conclusive proof is thus shown that owners do not want to wait, for big handicaps when over a £25 race they can make as big a haul and with greater certainty. It is the first reverse our bookmakers have had t his season.
Gipsy Grand and llippomencs are both being trained for the Cup distance, so it is quite uncertain which will be the stable rep. I fancy the former.
Both Dilemma and Aidershot are receiving good support and they arc well. Casket is to be blistered this week. Ilin owner, B. Curtis, senr., met with an accident last week, falling off a tram-car, since which ho has been confined to his house, but is getting allright again.
The two-year-old Marlin struck herself, which has interfered with her preparation for our meet - ing.
Rancour is turned out for a spell. Nearly ail Goodman’s string are at present hors de combat.
Cuirassina is suffering from influenza, which has thrown her a lot back and I think' will prevent her racing this season. It is reported in to-day’s Dunedin Star that St. Hippo and Stcpfeldt will come here to fulfil engagements, providing they train on all right. Great interest is evinced about, them, and astrong public desire that they may put in an appearance to supplement our rather weak fields for the better-class events.
. Last Monday morning the Messrs Alison Bros, well-known racing string was auctioned at Messrs Hunter and Nolan’s Durham Yards, Mr .1. Philson conducting the sale.
