January 6. General entries received for the Wellington Racing Club’s Summer Meeting, compared with last year, are very satisfactory. On the first day the comparative returns are : —Anniversary Handicap, 19 in 1895, 27 in 1896; Nursery, 9,8; Hurdles, 7, 11 ; Welter, 9, 14; President’s Handicap. which takes the place of the Disposal Stakes, 5, 17; Hack, 22, 19; Telegraph, 17, 18. Second day —January Handicap, 18 in 1895, 28 in 1896; Second Hurdles, 7, 11 ; Juvenile Handicap, 10, 8 ; Welter, 7, 18 ; Second Hack, 26, 22; Metropolitan, 14, 24; Farewell, 13,14. Totals — 1895, 181 ; 1896, 241. The Cup acceptances are due on the 14th inst.

James Macara’s Dinah Shad (by Piscatorious) fell in the Scurry at Masterton and broke her back. Sir Agnes (by Master Agnes), the winner, is quick over short courses, and the Petroleum (Cadogan —Petrolense) fillies are racing well. Selma won a double at Lower Valley, and Vasiline scored once at Featherston. They are three-year-olds. The many friends of Frank Hill, of Wanganui, throughout the colony, will be sorry to hear lie is seriously ill. King’s Bowman easily beat War Note (Lochiel filly, bred in Australia) in the Telegraph Handicap at the Masterton-Opaki meeting ; dividend, £1 ss. James’ Crescent threw away the Maiden Hack, which was won by Listener; dividend, £7 12s. Mrs Hutana’s Slaiden (C. F. Vallance) beat four others any how in the Ladies’ Bracelet; dividend, £2 2s. Sea Serpent (Kingan) beat Prince Cole and Porepo in the Opaki Stakes ; dividend, £3 ss. Slaiden (Casey) won the Hack Handicap, with Springtime second, and On Dit third; Makomako started; dividend, £5 12s. King’s Bowman (Ayres) had no difficulty in beating Sea Serpent, Prince Cole, and Porepo in the Waipipi Handicap. On Dit (Kingan) won the Handicap Flying, Crescent and Napoleon being in the places; Scrip, Rush ley, and Belle (Rushley filly, from Australia) also started; dividend, £4 ss. Sir Agnes paid £7 2s in the Scurry; eight starters. Mr A. W. Case, president of the club, won three events wi'h Rumour’s progeny (Sea Serpent, Listener, and On Dit, his own breeding. The weather was fine, the attendance only fair, the fields small, and the racing uninteresting. Mr Joseph Ames put £2,066 through the totalisator. The Lower Valley Jockey Club’s Annual Meeting was largely attended in fine weather. Mr Fred. Pearce started with Bright and Morrison’s machine, and also won the Hunter’s Hurdles on his Early Bird gelding, Cyrus If., Bird being second ; Houpla and Sedition fell, and Much-a-do ran off; dividend. £5 2s. Bird ran unplaced in the Handicap .Hurdles, which was won by Bulls Eye (Remmington —Leisure Hour), Captain Boison second. Amberite (by Remmingion), owned by Mr John Orr and ridden by Beale, beat eight others, including North Shore, in the Maiden Handicap ; dividend, £25 Is. The Hutttrained Strathbraan (Aprcmont—Engagement) beat Voltaire and Legislator in the Martin Memorial Handicap; dividend, £2 6s. Semla (Petroleum —Belinda) won the Hack Handicap, Dissenter second, and Kingslake, a big favourite, third ; dividend, £ll 10s. Strathbraan (Higgs) also won the Lower Valley Handicap, with Review second and Legislator third; the other starters were Voltaire, Primero, and Aurius ; dividend, £2 6s. Meadow, paying a £22 5s dividend, was beaten by a length in the Mile Hack by Selina, Dissenter running third ; dividend, £2 16s. Mr T. D. Thompson’s Guardfish won the Saddle Race from sixteen starters ; dividend, £6 12s. Mr C. Cress, owner of Field Gem, who ran second in the Maiden Hack, appealed to the Metropolitan Club against the stewards decision in dismissing the protect against Amberite, whose rider took part in an unregistered meeting. The Wairarapa Racing Club Summer Electing was held in fine weather. There was a good attendance. King’s Bowman (Ayres) won the Flying comfortably from Warnote and Review, the only other starters. Dividend, £1 Ils. Mutineer (Treason —Desdemona) won the Hurdles Scrap Iron beat Bull’s Eye, Daisy Bell, and four others in the Hack Hardies. Dividend, £9 19s. Vaseline (Petroleum —St. Helena) won the Trial Hack from eight starters. Dividend, £4 18s. Revolution was made a big favourite in the Wairarapa Cup, and suffered a neck defeat by Legislator (Administrator —Ruby) 7-4, Primer (7.3) third. Von Tempsky (7.7), Prince Cole (8.8), Porepo (7.3), and Arius (7.5) also started. Bona Fide (Sou’-Wester —Eides) paid £l5 10s in the Nikau Handicap, Springtime second, Selina third. Strathbraan beat Voltaire, Review, and Legislator in the Grandstand Welter. Dividend, £ll3s. • Dissenter (Puritan —Achievement) won the Hack Welter, Persimmon second, Springtime third. Dividend, £8 Bs. £4,500 was put through the totalisator. Mr E. F.
