ANOTHER MUSKET SIRE FOR ENGLAND.

The Musket.horse Derringer, which was sent to England a week or two hack, was a successful performer in the “ all black ” of Mr John Marshall, the well-known Auckland sportsman, when that stable, aided by trainer John Chaafe and jockey Alick Sutherland, with Necklet, Turquoise, Thunderbolt, and Derringer, was well nigh invincible. As a two-year-old he won the Nursery Handicap at Ellerslie in 1884-5, ran second to Welcome Jack in the A.R.C. Railway Plate (weight for age), and second to Alpine Rose in the Nursery Handicap at Hawkes Bay. As a three-year-old Derringer ran third in the Auckland Derby to Foul Shot and Stonyhurst, who had beaten the New Zealand Cup winner, Fusilade, in the Canterbury Derby at Riccarton, and at the same meeting Derringer downed Foul Shot at Derby weights in the Sires’ Produce Stakes, the time being 2min 40|sec, and ran second to Waitiri in the* A.R.C. St. Leger Stakes, and second to the same mare in the A.R.C Handicap, one mile and three-quarter miles, in which a record time (3 min ssec) was put up. He ran second to Necklace in the D.J.C. Handicap, and at the'same meeting finished second to Tasman in the Members’ Plate, one mile, weight for age, and also ran third to Necklace in the Forbury Handicap. His sister, Brown Bess is a successful stud matron, and another sister, Cartridge, after running successfully in Auckland, was shipped to England, where her stock are fetching big prices. Artillery, recently shipped to America, and Derringer are the only horses with the nick of Musket on Yattendon. Derringer stood in the Poverty Bay district previous to going to the Wairarapa, and the following of his progeny have been returned winners : — Retribution, Goodshot, The Marquis, Valencia, Derby, and Popgun. His stock, in the Wairarapa, now two years old, shows good size and plenty of quality. On arrival in England Derringer will in all probability take up his quarters at the Cobham Stud in Surrey. Petronel, also by Musket and sire of Ragimunde and Son of a Gun (winner of the Liverpool Cup), whose list is full for two years, isalso standing, and given proper chances,, there is no reason why Derringer shouldnot prove as. successfull as other descendants of Musket.
