NAPIER.

Training Notes from Hastings— Wellington Cup Betting. [by wire.] December 17. Messrs Pope and Siblej’s prize in bhe St. Alban’s lottery, the filly by Trenton —Girofle, arrived by the Manapouri last Sunday. She was taken to Palmer’s stable and remained there till yesterday, when she left for Porangahan, the residence of her owners. The groom in charge informed me that Mr W. R. Wilson is of the opinion that this filly and the one out of Lady-in-Waiting are the pick of the stallion’s yearlings. Training operations are in full swing at Hastings and Napier Park now, in view of the Xmas meetings to be held in this district. Moonraker, Maid Marion, Sequah, the Torpedo —Honeysuckle colt, Zaccho, and Waterlily at the latter place, and Gooseman’s, Robertson’s, Ellingham’s, and Maher’s teams, at Hastings, have been putting in good work. Tiritea, who left here last Monday to fulfil his engagements at your Christmas and New Year fixtures, is greatly fancied locally for the Steeplechase.

The Shrew’s connections here are backing her heartily for the Wellington Cup. One would think from the confident manner in which they are planking down their bit, that Bianca’s game and sterling daughter could not possibly lose. The weights for the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club Meeting made their appearance on Monday morning, but as the acceptances are not due until Wednesday next, I shall refrain from hazarding any tips till then. Messrs Wilson and Profitt report the following betting for the week on the Wellington Cup : — 100 to 12 The Shrew, 100 to 10 Skirmisher, 200 to 19 Lady Zetland, 100 to 9 The Artist, 100 to 6 North Atlantic, 100 to 10 Quiltiri, 100 to 5 Banner, 100 to 5 Pompom, 150 to 6 Kent, 100 to 3 Brooklet.

By reference to our business columns it will be seen that Mr William Mackenzie, the powerful and gifted baritone, gives a Grand Sacred Concert in the City Hall on Christmas night. Those who heard him sing “ The Trumpet Shall Sound ” at his first concert will hail the announcement with delight. In addition to a powerful array of artistes Madame Goldenstedt, Mons Willomoff, and Charles Waud will assist. Full particulars are to appear shortly.
