ATHLETICS, Etc.

Entries for all running events in the Auckland paledonian Sports programme close on Saturday evening next. The North Shore Amateur Athletic Club entries also fall due on the same evening. The Caledonian Society’s big handicap of three distances, viz., 100yds, J 50yds, and 250yds, should attract a very large field, as the prize money, £2O, is a very liberal figure. A meeting of the Auckland Amateur Athletic Club Committee was held at the Metropolitan Hotel on Friday evening last, Mr B. J. Esam presiding. The Secretary, Mr AV. C. Speight, in reporting on the replies received from the various athletes who had been written to re the Championship Meeting at Christchurch, informed the committee that Messrs. Davies, Jones, Creamer, Martin, Roberts, W. W. Pilkington, McKean, and M. O’Connor had signified their intention of going South if selected. Messrs F. E. N. G-audin and R. Oliphant have been unable to obtain the necessary leave of absence, whilst it is also questionable as to whether Reynolds, T. B. O’Connor, A. Brady, Kallendar and Beere will be able to get away. The following were chosen to represent the c l u b : —Messrs. A. Jones, A. A. Davies, [<’ H. Creamer, T. Roberts, W. H. Martin, W. W. Pilkington, E. Reynolds; A. Brady, T. B. D’Connor. J. A. Kallender, and G. B. Beere. It was decided to ask M. O’Connor and McKean to give trials over either of the three distances—halfmile, one mile, and three miles—each TimneT to choose his own particular distance, and in the event of the times proving satisfactory both men will be included in the team. At a recent meeting of the delegates of the Canterbury Swimming Clubs it was decided that ‘the Canterbury water polo team be sent to Sydney in January next to compete in the Australasian water polo championships. It is probable that W. J. Stratton (Christchurch) will represent Canterbury in the swimming events, and Bassett (Richmond) in the diving championships The Wellington Amateur Athletic Club’s recent gathering has unearthed a good distance man in Hawthorne, whu won the one and three mile events in good times. The programme of the events to be decided at the Australasian Amateur Athletic Championship Meeting at Christchurch, on the 2nd and 4th January, is as follows 100yds Flat. 220yds Flat,. 440yds Flat, Half-mile Flat, One-mile Flat, Three-miles Flat, One-mile .Walk, Three-miles Walk, High Jump, Long Jump, Pole Jump, 120yds Hurdles, 440 yds Hurdles, Throwing the Hammer (16 lb), Putting the Weight (161 b The following New Zealand Cycling Championships will also be decided :—Halfmile Bicvcle, One-mile Bicycle, Five-mile Bicycle,/Ten-mile Bicycle, Twenty-five-mile Bicycle. Some of the above cycling events will be declared Australian championships. The New Zealand, New South Wales and Victorian Athletic Associations have undertaken to be adequately represented at the sports. The colony gaining most points will be declared the champion colony. In the event of a tie, teconds will count. The entries close with Mr L. A. Cuff, hon. secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, at Christchurch on Dec. 28th. Referring to the action of the Auckland Amateur Athletic Club in deciding that no outside competitors be allowed to represent the Club, “ Vaulter says: —“ lam glad to learn that the Auckland Club has set its face against ‘ importing men. This is a matter I have written very strongly about before to-day, and the fact that the Auckland Club has given the Napier man to understand that they cannot encourage such proposals as his is an example that should result in good. The governing body should step in and make it impossible for any such unsportsmanlike business as importing men for championship meetings. Professor Carollo’s annual .picnic and sports at Motatapu on Saturday last proved of a most enjoyable nature, and was quite as largely attended as usual. The sports progromme contained a series of interesting events, the contests for which proved very keen.
