DUNEDIN.
Backers inquiring for The Artist — State of the Cup Market —Casket Develops a Leg—Outpost an unlikely starter in the Cup — Gipsy Grand. doing good work. [by wire.] October 22. The Caulfield Cup, beyond a few small amounts, was a “ skinner ” for the Dunedin bookmakers. Waterfall’s victory was the greatest win they have had for a long time over any Australian event. The publication of acceptances for the New Zealand Cup has not led to any further speculation. The Artist is often enquired for, but backers will not take the shortened price offered since Friday. The following are the quotations ruling : — Marino, 100 to 14; North Atlantic, 100 to 12; Impulse, 1.00 to 11 ; Skirmisher and Pegasus, 100 to 10 ; Gipsy Grand, 100 to 9 ; The Artist, 100 to 8; Euroclydon and Solitaire, 100 to 7 ; Chaos, 100 to 6 ; Lady Zetland and Waiuku, 100 to 5 ; Magazine, Outpost, and Sternchaser, 100 to 4; Rip Van Winkle and Bessie McCarthy, 100 to 2 ; others, 100 to 1.
Casket developed a “ leg ” last week and will not start at the Cup meeting. Gipsy Grand is doing good work, but is a warrior at the start, which takes a lot out of a horse in a long journey. I have not yet heard of his going two miles fast in any of his trials. Although Outpost has accepted I do not expect to see him at the post. He has no supporters here.
Euroclydon is very well and won at Oamaru lust week, but I cannot give him a chance. Emmeline, though small, is a compact customer, and will take some beating in the Oaks. The entries received on Saturday for the D.J.C. Spring Meeting are up to the average.
