DUNEDIN.

[by

August 27. The Catesby —Wai colt has been named Conspirator and the Artillery^—Fallacy youngster Marlin. Both belong to Stephenson and Hazlett. The Catesby colt is not a taking youngster at first sight, but I think he will improve on acquaintance. He is a strong colt and should be able to stand a lot of work.

. Rip. Van. Winkle has been .backed, locally, .fox the hi ew Zealand Cup for several' hundreds, the price ranging from 2 to''4.: This' is the only business done since my last wife. - I-saw the work at Forbury this morning, when there was capital going. Maremma held Maximillian very cheap over six furlongs. Outpost, Gipsy Grand, and Emmeline did ,a mile' spin at top thie gallop being very good. Gipsy Grand was on top at the finish. There is no doubt he is a good colt and bar accidents will be prominent in classic events this spring. He is a big fellow in appearance and the finest we have had here for years. Judgine by his conformation he is up to any weight. Waddell’s string are in good form. They (Captive, Arline, and Lady Spencer) were sent all out over a mile, the first named having the best of the spin. Lady Spencer is, however, a bad track performer, while Captive is very misleading in trial gallops. He must have hard going to suit him. I had an introduction to a lot of our two-year-olds. They are doing steady work, but I have made up my mind not to form hasty impressions as I will now have a regular opportunity with favourable weather, to view the doings every week. None of the youngsters are very forward, but in appearance Lord Rosebery (St. Clair — Lady Emma) impressed me as the best so far of the old mare’s progeny. Casket was not out, but Euroclydon did steady work in company with the grey gelding Musket. Mr Goodman has another grey in his stable in Jane Eyre who arrived last week. Swivel is located at the Racecourse Hotel and now appears sound. He is far more leniently treated in the handicap for our Hunt Club meeting than he was in the North Island or Grand National Meeting. I would advise backers not to forget him next Saturday week. Rebel is looking better than he has done for the last six months.

Cotton is still invalided at Christchurch.
