YACHTING.

The 10-rater Waitangi left for Wellington yesterday under the charge of Captain Butts. She is evidently the only boat leaving Auckland to compete in the first class championship. Ruth’s Island appears to be a favourite spot for yachting men. What is the attraction? Perhaps the lady visitors have something to do with it. Ask the Tangaroa fellows; they were there all last week. The Ngaru made a fast passage up from the above island on Sunday, doing the distance to her moorings at the Shore in a little over three hours.

I wonder what boats will compete in the 2|-rater races during the coming regattas. Some of the so-called 2U raters will have to cut down considerably before being able to enter. The committees have done well in allowing them to go two-tenths above that rating. 1 would like to know the reason why the Daisy does not enter for these races. Her owner thinks she is quite good enough for the Gloriana, especially in a breeze, and she certainly pushed Logan’s flyer pretty close in last year’s Auckland regatta. Then why not give her another trial ? ' The Messrs Seagar Bros, have lauched the steel 5-rater yacht which they have been building for Mr R. Masefield. Her design is quite up-to-date, and she has very fine lines. If the new boat can carry her sail and if small displacement has anything to do with speed she should be a very fast boat, particularly in smooth water. The Mascotte won the big race at the Akaroa regatta last week. She has had things pretty well all her own way of late years down South, but if she competes at the Championship Meeting she will find the Waitangi a hard nut to crack. One of the most interesting events on the Judges Bay programme will be the race for centre-board yachts. Nearly a dozen boats will compete, amongst .them the old crack Manola, and she will have to go all she knows to take the prize.
