MELBOURNE RACING NOTES.
It is said that a Bendigo man has constructed yet another starting machine, the apparatus of which does not fly upwards or outwards, but disappears into the ground. _ The defunct stallion Newminster, like The Possible and numerous others, was brought up on the bottle and thrived on it. He was a sensational horse'on'the turf, sweeping the .boards as a two-year-old, and beating everything he met. He was trained in private by F. Dakin, and was a pronounced favourite for the Derby all thorough the- 1 -winter. What happened him is too well known to all racing men who remember the occasion. There were reports of his having been nobbled, but when his trainer took him to Flemington he was quite sure that he had outwitted those Who had designs against the son of The Marquis. However, when Derby Day arrived he was soon shown that he had been mistaken. The horse couldn’t even raise a gallop, and it was a long time before he recovered from the poison administered him. There was no doubt but that he was got at, but there wasn’t sufficient evidence to advance against the suspected persons. There were people, of course, who asserted that he had simply lost his form, but this was scouted by his trainer and the majority of the public. Newminster afterwards won the Geelong Cup, and put up a really good performance when he romped home in the Caulfield Cup with 8.10 up. There are a number of New Zealand animals besides Carbine to be sold when the Lederberg stud-is to be submitted in March next, including Rayenswing (half sister to Sir Modred and full sister to Mr G.bllan’s Fair Nell, dam of Saracen, Bonnie Scotland, .and Loyalty), Mitrailleuse by Musket, Sierra, Forest Queen, Bustle,. and Precedence. Then there is St. Odille (dam of Mr O’Brien’s Cartridge), Clare, Tourbillon,- Wilga, and others. There are twenty-nine yearlings to be sold, sixteen of ..them being by Carbine. •■Some of the mares are stinted to Pilgrim’s .Progress, and Carbine. ••
The Ballarat Cup, decided the other day,, was , contested by. two horses only—The Golden King (King of the Ring—Naomi) going out at ten to , one on and easily, beating Tempest. Last year Shotbolt (Newminster—Brunette) was returned ; the victor. , t : . The Tasmanian Derby)run the other day, was won by Silveroid, .by Mozart. Pauline, supposed to have been bred in New Zealand, appropriated the Spring Handicap. ,
