going to the post, for the handicap is a very equitable one. I don’t fancy Merganser’s chance at 9.8 nor Prime Warden’s show at 8.8. Au Revoir and Liberator at 8.6. and 8.4. respectively are nicely handicapped, and the selected on the day must be dangerous. Hippomenes at 8.4 must also be taken into consideration, and last year’s winner, Rosefeldt. must also be reckoned with. Skirmisher, Saracen, Rangipuhi, and Pegasus are well in the race, as are Ich Dien and Royal Rose. Monte Carlo has received a lot of support for the event, and 7.7 should not spoil his chance. Of those lower down the list the chance of Three Star, Lakeshell, Outpost, Artillery, Mahaki, Searchlight, Westmere, and Banner appear to me to be best on paper. At the present time the winner of the New Zealand Cup will take a lot of j finding. . . ■Sporting matters in this district are very quiet at present. The only one in work in F. Watson’s stable is The Friar, a three-year-old colt, by Hiko ex Religieuse. ’
