Coursing.

Fine weather was experienced for the May Coursing Meeting at Dunedin, and the intercolonial character of the Challenge Stakes attracted a large attendance. In the final for the principal event Clement’s Tonic (Bazouk —Yellow Girl) beat Brilliant Boy, and won the Stakes. The Consolation Stakes fell to Wild Rose II.; Sailor Jack won the First Eight Dog Stake; Douglas won the Second, and Pine Hut won the Third. Great interest is being taken in the Coursing Meeting next Saturday, and there is every prospect of a large gathering resulting at Avondale. Good entries have been received, and there should be some capital courses run. At the sale of privilege 3 held yesterday Mr S. 0. Oaulton bought the booths for £2l, the gates and stand fell to Mr Mlark for £36 ; Mr Neylon bought the cards for £6, and Mrs Mclntosh got the fruit stalls for £1 10s. Acceptances and draw take place to-night at 8 p.m.. at the British Hotel for the New Lynn Maiden Stakes and Eden All-Aged Stakes, to be run on Saturday, 12th, and Wednesday, 16th May. There will also be a Consolation Stakes for dogs beaten in the Ist and 2nd round of the Maiden Stakes. Entrance, 30s ; 10s to go to the funds. At the meeting of the committee last night it was decided that all bookmakers licensed by Tattersail’s be charged 10s per diem if they be members of the Coursing Club* Any person not complying with this will be expelled from the meeting. The Leader says that Mr J. 0. Jerome’s team for New Zealand includes Verdi, Lucia, Royal May, Royal Scone and Bequeath. Verdi, now in his second season, is the crack member of the team; last season, as a puppy, he won the New South Wales Waterloo Cup at Goulburn, and with ordinary luck he ought to hold his own against the pick of the Maorilanders. His sister Lucia is a remarkably good-looking bitch, but has no performances to recommend other than having answered a question satisfactorily in private. These are the main hopes of the invading contingent, as Royal Rose has probably seen her best day, while Royal Scone and Bequeath are greyhounds sof only moderate calibre. The team is in charge, of Walter Glew, a nephew of the well known trainer, Walter Melrose, but more recently associated with George Small, who put the quintet on board the boat in the best of health. The first competition in which the dogs will take part is the Dunedin Challenge Stakes early next month, after which Auckland will be visited, and then the dogs will return in time to take part in the Victorian Waterloo Cup. Mr Jerome has the best wishes of all coursing men in his plucky invasion of Maoriland.

Texture, the English Waterloo Cup winner, and Taste, in company with another of Count Stroganoff’s English team, left England for St. Petersburg op the 19th March, with the object of being bred from. The Russian rules have been recently altered. Only groyhounds bred in the country can now compete for the best prizes. Texture has not yet developed “ symptoms,” but is expected to do so shortly. Count Stroganoff’s home team includes Troughead, Simonian, and Monowana, and one of the firstnamed pair will, no doubt, be selected as Texture’s mate. Taste will probably be mated with Monowana.
