Sporting Review. THURSDAY, MARCH 1, 1894. MR ALFRED KING.
The news of the death of Mr Alfred King, the sporting editor of the New Zealand Mail, will be received with sincere regret by scores of Aucklanders. The deceased gentleman was well known in athletic and sporting circles during his residence in Auckland, and his friends were many and his enemies few. To Mr King is due the credit of bringing the Auckland Amateur Athletic Club into being. It was he who convened the meeting held in the Thames Hotel in 1877, an d which resulted in the formation of the club. Mr King was elected secretary, and during his connection with the club he worked untiringly to make it a lasting success. During his tenancy of the editorial chair of the sporting department of the Mail Mr King gave valuable information to the sporting community. “ Vigilant’s ” anticipations for coming events were always awaited with interest, and it is a rather melancholy coincidence that his tips for the Manawatu Meeting should have appeared in the New Zealand Times on the morning of his death. Mr King was well and favourably known in hack handicapping circles in the Wellington district, and was an esteemed contributor to the Sporting Review.
