Coursing.

By

‘Contango.’

Last week I had the pleasure of receiving a card from Mr William Rowe, of Te Aroha, stating that he was going to devote his time this incoming coursing season to the training of the greyhound, and as I know Mr Rowe personally I am certain that who ever may patronise him with the care of their pets can do so with every confidence, and can rely upon their doars being brought well to slips. I shall look for good results to come from the kennels of Mr Wm. Rowe, Waihou, Te Aroha. ‘Occidental James’ has had another addition to his kennel this week in the shape of a very handsome bitch. Her breeding is as yet a secret, but as looks go she is one that ought to pay for her biscuits.

I met the other day, in the aristocratic district of Remuera, the son of a local sport exercising a pair of good-looking dogs, and as far as appearance goes they ought to keep that lucky sportsman in the blue ribband of luck. Alex, Beattie had the misfortune to have his dog Couranto staked last week while jumping a gate. The fair owner of Mangere has now become a patron of the longtail. May she raise a winning flag during the incoming coursing season. I see by the Melbourne Age that Col. North has had the misfortune to lose his promising stud greyhound Needham, by Herschel out of Miss Glendyne. The dog died at the Avondale kennels, New Eltham, from acute inflammation of the bowels. Needham divided the Champion Produce Stakes at Haydock Park in September, 1891, and subsequently met with an aceident at Studley Royal, which closed his coursing career. The annual meeting of the Auckland Coursing Club was held at the British Hotel on Friday evening last. The Hon. E. Mitchelson was re-elected president, Messrs W. Lyell and F. Lawry, M.H.R., vice-presidents, Mr Fenwick treasurer, and Mr Coates secretary. Messrs Macready, Rose and McKee were added to the committee. The reception of the second payments for the Challenge Stakes, which were due, were fully met.
