WHITFORD PARK YEARLINGS.

Mr L. D. Natean’s Whitford Park yearlings were placed under the hammer at Sylvia Park on Thursday last in the presence of a fairly large attendance, but when the bidding commenced it was apparent that very few of those present were there as buyers. The prices realised were most discouraging, several lots going at about the price paid for the service of the sire. Foreign buyers were Conspicious by their absence, and the bid were pretty well all local —‘very local,’ as one gentleman remarked referring to the miserable prices offered. A start was made by the thoroughbred stallion being brought into the ring, and the bids for this seven-year-old son of Leolinus —Atlantis were simply ridiculous. Starting at roogns the competition rose to i4Ogns, above which there was no more, and the stallion was entered in the book as sold to Mr W. McLaughlin. The yearlings were then sold, or rather slaughtered. A Fabulous —Outcast filly was the first put up, and from isgns the bidding progressed at a snail’s pace until a halt was made at Mr W. Paul’s offer of 21 gns, beyond which there was no quotation, and down went Mr Philson’s hammer. This was a pretty start, but worse was to follow. A beautifully pro-

portioned brown filly by St. Leger from Cantinere was the second lot offered, and for this there were only two bids, viz., sogns and an advance of logns made by Mr Houston, of Christchurch, at which

price he secured this grand youngster. This filly was simply dirt cheap. A St. Leger—Brassolis filly went down to Mr W. Adams for jogns, and the same gentleman obtained the St. Leger—Lovebird filly for 5 6gns ! A nice price truly to pay for the result of a union of St. Leger with that grandly bred mare Lovebird, whose sire Macaroni won the Two Thousand Guineas and Derby of 1863, and sired Camelia (winner of the One Thousand Guineas of 1876), Macgregor (winner of the Two Thousand Guineas of 1870), Spinaway (winner of the One Thousand Guineas and Oaks of 1875 and sold’as d broodmare for ssoogns), and several other equine aristocrats. And yet s&gns is the price put upon a wellgrown filly out of such a sire’s daughter and by a tried racegetter like St. Leger I The appreciation, pluck, or purse of the horse buyer is surely contracting when such a sacrifice as this is allowed. Mr Dibble bid up to sOgns for the Tasman — Sybil filly, at which price he was named the purchaser, and Mr Duncan bidding 5 gns above the zogns initial offer for the Fabulous — Inisthona colt, secured the last of Mr Nathan’s youngsters. Wickford, the two-year-old son of Nordenfeldt —Brassolis was next offered, but as jogns was the amount of the spectators app.eciation of this combination of Musket, Panic, and Touchstone blood,

the auctioneer passed him in. Mr Nathan next submitted his brood

mares, and for four serviceable stud matrons, two having foals at foot and all served by Leolantis, the money obtained amounted to the handsome figure of iz3gns ! Outcast (by Castaway out of Moss Rose), and served by Leolantis, was bought by Mr Mitchelson for lygns. The Sword Dance — Brassolis mare Coryphee, with a foal at foot to Leolantis, by whom she has been served again, was started at isgns, and . knocked down to Mr Price at 32gns; and the same buyer obtained the Panic —Josephine mare Brass, olis, with filly foal at foot to St. Leger, and served by Leolantis, for 34-gns. The last of Mr Nathan’s catalogue was reached with the sale of Inisthona, also served by Leolantis, at 4-ogns to Mr Rathbone. Three yearlings from Mrs W. Walters’ Glenora Park Stud were next submitted, but for a long time no voice was heard. A Hippocampus —Rosarina colt by a Nelson —Muskerina filly elicited no bid, luckily for the owner ; but the appearance of a brown colt by Hotchkiss from Hipporina broke the ice, and the bids went up slowly to 1 logns, at which price Mr George Wright became the purchaser. ; Two sales were effected on behalf of Messrs Duder Bros. Rosie, by Anteros—Kate, with a foal by Brigadier and served again by the same sire, being obtained by Mr D. Hughes for 2 3gns Gannet, by Musket, with foal by Brigadier, and served again by him, was bought by Mr Aitchison for 2ogns. The list of the thoroughbreds sold is as follows - ON ACCOUNT OF MR L. D. NATHAN. ■ :■ J.r , Gs. Chestnut filly, by St. Leger—Brassolis, Mr Kingstone, Wanganui 30 . Chestnut filly, by St. Leger—Lovebird, Mr Kingstone,- Wanganui........... 56

A three-year-old gelding by Muskapeer, out of a three-quarter bred mare, was bought from Mrs Walters for 29gns by Mr F. Stennings. who was doubtless taken by the evident jumping look the gelding bears. The chestnut filly Lady Fair (by St. Leger—Lady Brunette by Musket —Brunette) was sold on behalf of a Taranaki sportsman to Mr Bell for isgns, and a bay colt by Castor by Queen Mab was put back at zogns, his owner. Mr Wood, wisely decling to part with him for such a sum. A yearling filly by Bryan O’Lynn, out of Sneak, was bought by Mr Howell for I2gns, and several mares with foals at foot to Mr Holgate’s imported Irish hunting sire Paddy’s Land, were sold as follows : mare Fairy, with filly foal at foot, isgns, Mr Black; Fancy, with foal at foot, same buyer; a Hippocampus mare, with foal, zigns. Mr Mitchelson ; and an eight-year draught mare, with filly foal, and in foal again, zogns, Mr Simpkin.
